New Update Microsoft releases new, faster Teams app for Windows and Mac

Microsoft has unveiled a faster and redesigned version of its Microsoft Teams communication and collaboration software that has begun rolling out to Windows users today as a preview release.

The company describes the new Teams client as being twice as faster and consuming 50% less memory and up to 70% less disk space when compared to the current (Classic) app.

It will also launch three times faster, allowing users to switch between chats and channels up to 1.7 times faster than the Classic Teams.

Redmond expects it to become generally available starting June 2023 after it irons out all the kinds based on customer feedback received during the preview stage.

"The new app is built on a foundation of speed, performance, flexibility, and intelligence—delivering up to two times faster performance while using 50 percent less memory so you can save time and collaborate more efficiently," said Jeff Teper, President of Collaborative Apps and Platforms at Microsoft.

"We have also streamlined the user experience so that it is simpler to use and easier to find everything in one place.

"These enhancements also provide the foundation for game-changing new AI-powered experiences, such as Copilot for Microsoft Teams, announced earlier this month."

The new Microsoft Teams also bundles support for Copilot, Microsoft's AI-powered assistant that will help users get up to speed before joining a meeting and help them answer questions in real time while chatting with their colleagues.

While those in the public preview program can immediately gain access to the new Teams via the "Try the new Teams" toggle, if you're in the Targeted Release program, you'll get access to the Teams preview release starting mid-April 2023.

Admins will have the option to opt-in to the Teams preview program for users in production via the Teams update management policy, which will allow selecting the users who will see the preview toggle to gain access to the new Teams.

"New Teams initially support Windows Intel, AMD, and ARM platforms and will be coming for all major platforms including Web, native M1, M2 & Intel Macs, and VDI," said Sumi Singh, Corporate Vice President for Teams Engineering, in a separate blog post.

"We anticipate sharing significant performance gains as support for each of these platforms is released."

Towards the end of last month, Microsoft released a revamped Teams which brought in faster performance, a consequence of lowered CPU, disk and memory usages, as well as a simpler overall UI and UX. Dubbed "New Teams", the improvements made under the hood are now trickling out to Teams for Education as well.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft officially announced it was developing a new version of its Teams desktop app. The new version of its online meeting and collaboration tool is supposed to be more efficient and simpler to use. Today, the company revealed some of the security improvements it is putting into the new Teams app.

In a blog post, Microsoft stated that the new Teams app will use MSIX packages and App Installer for deployment, instead of using a custom-developed installer and updater. This change "reduces risk surface and maintenance cost" according to the company. It added: "We are also moving away from installing Teams in the user profile. While installing in the user profile is convenient and does not require elevated privileges, it also makes common post-exploitation activities, such as maintaining persistence, easier. The new Teams relies on App Installer for installations and will install in a privileged location, where non-administrator users cannot tamper with its executable files."

In March, Microsoft launched a new version of Microsoft Teams for Windows users via a public preview. However, at the moment, the "classic" version of Teams for Windows is still the default for users. That will change later this year.

In an interview for the new Microsoft IT-based podcast UnplugIT, (via Petri), Anupam Pattnaik, Microsoft's Product Lead for the revamped Teams version, stated it would become the default for Windows users sometime later in 2023.

Right now, the issue is getting the new Teams version (which is also called Teams 2.0) to have the same features as the current "classic" Teams client, including things like Breakout Rooms. Pattnaik stated: “Right now, the classic Teams is the default because we do not have all the features that we support in classic Teams in the new Teams,” Pattnaik explained. “That’s the reason we have right now classic Teams as the default option, but sometime later this calendar year, we’ll make the new Teams the default option when we have feature parity, and when we feel confident that users can switch to the new Teams.”

The Windows version of the revamped Microsoft Teams will become the default later in 2023

A new Microsoft 365 admin center message, with the ID MC617066, informs administrators that Microsoft has changed the schedule. The option to switch to the new Microsoft Teams from the old client will become available in mid July 2023.

The new Microsoft Teams will replace the old client version in September 2023. New installations of Microsoft Teams will install the new version and all existing old installations of Teams will be migrated to the new version of the application gradually.

According to a recently updated post on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the new Microsoft Teams could officially launch sometime in October. This tracks with statements made in May by Anupam Pattnaik, Microsoft's Product Lead for the revamped Teams version, who said it would become the default version by late 2023.

Pattnaik also stated that the new Teams would become available for Mac, web, and VDI users later in 2023. The Microsoft 365 roadmap states the new Teams will be generally available for "Desktop, Android, Web, Mac, iOS" in October.

While this is the latest update on the new Teams version release on the company's roadmap site, it's possible Microsoft could change these generally available dates at any time.

The new version of the Microsoft Teams app became generally available less than a month ago, on October 5, for Windows and Mac users. At the moment, users still have the choice of switching between the "classic" version of the Teams app and the new version. However, there's word that the transition will be relatively short.

Petri reports that a message in the private Microsoft 365 admin center states that the classic Teams apps for Windows and Mac will automatically update to the new Teams app after March 31, 2024. The message was made for IT admins who are in charge of maintaining Teams at their companies.

The new Microsoft Teams app is now generally available for virtual desktops

In October, Microsoft officially launched the new "2.0" version of its Teams online chat and meeting app for Windows and Mac users. This week, the company revealed that the new Teams app is now generally available for its virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) users after a period of public preview testing.

In a blog post, Microsoft stated the new Teams app for virtual desktops has the same features as the new Teams app for Windows and Mac platforms. That includes taking up much less storage space and using less memory than the "classic" Teams app, along with faster overall performance.

The new Teams app also has features made specifically for virtual desktop users and their admins. They can use one installer for the app for both the normal desktop and the virtual desktop, and there's also an option to automatically update the app in the virtual desktop environment.
