After launching at the end of May this year, Overwatch gained quick momentum by racking up an impressive 10 million players in less than a month. In October, Blizzard announced that the game had passed 20 million registered players globally.
Blizzard has shipped a number of updates during the course of this year, with the company focused on delivering new game modes, content, and heroes including the recently released Sombra. The Competitive Play system also received a major overhaul as part of Season 2, with the skill rating system expanded from a 100-point scale to 5000 points.
It seems that all that hard work has paid off, as Overwatch was nominated for five awards of which it went on to win three, including top honors for 'Game of the Year' where it managed to beat Doom, Inside, Titanfall 2, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.

It’s a message about diversity. It’s a message about a bright and positive and hopeful future. And these are all things that we really believe everyone needs a little bit of right now.”
