Actually a really fascinating test. Where the power usage is considered also.

Some surprising results though, but if this is true, companies might actually save some money if they pick other antivirusses.

Out of curiosity, does anyone disable their real-time protection when copying large files, to or from partitions or external mediums?

Sometimes yes, when the files are really big and I sense that the AV is slowing it down.

Have you ever tried setting your AV to not scanning files larger than ***mb ? Your file should get skipped from the realtime scanner and it shouldn't slow you down.

Not with the current Antivirus software, that option is not available. Also, most of the time I have R/T disabled.
