Homepage: PeaZip free archiver utility, open extract RAR TAR ZIP files
GitHub: GitHub - peazip/PeaZip: Free Zip / Unzip software and Rar file extractor. Cross-platform file and archive manager

Today's launch of PeaZip 8.0 marks another milestone release after the release of PeaZip 7.0 in 2019. Since it is a brand new release, Windows SmartScreen may throw a security warning when you attempt to run the installer of the program on your devices.

Users who don't want to install PeaZip can download and run the portable version as well, which is also offered as a 32-bit and 64-bit version.

PeaZip 8.2.0 is a new version of the cross-platform file archiver. . PeaZip is available for Windows and Linux, [...]
The official changelog lists a few changes in the new release. The big change in the new release is that PeaZip may now keep extracted files if it encounters errors during extraction. Users may access the extracted files in this case, even if the extraction process itself is terminated because of encountered errors. The developer notes that working with spanned archives, those spanning over a number of files, was improved in the new PeaZip release as well.

PeaZip's archive manager displays additional information in the interface when you run it (you may also bypass it by extracting directly). New information includes the compression and encryption method, modified, created, and accessed timestamps for each file, and the number of items that are in each folder inside the archive.

peazip file archive information

PeaZip users who use the file archiver's Smart Extraction feature may select the option now alongside other options on program startup.

The new release improves the program's command line options, and introduces a new folder (/res/batch/) which includes samples and system integration files.

Development was focused on improving the Linux version of PeaZip according to the changelog.
This release focuses on improving user experience on Linux systems, updating installers, improving the automatic configuration of applications for "open with" actions, and displaying more system's paths in the file manager.

PeaZip users have the following new options:
  • Set the small icon size to either 16px or 32px.
  • Select one of three tab bar styles: left-aligned, centered, links.
  • Display address bar as a solid bar or blended in.
  • Align toolbar buttons to the center or left.
  • Assign colors individually to the address bar, tool bar and tab bar.
On Windows, PeaZip supports the propagation of the Zone.identifier stream for 7z files. The stream is used by several applications to determine if additional protections need to be enabled when viewing the files. Microsoft Office uses the stream to determine whether macros need to be blocked automatically.

Other improvements include saving owner, group IDs and names when using Tar archives on Linux, a new timestamp precision option for ZIP and TAR/pax files, and an option to set a TAR standard (between GNU and PAX, with GNU the default).

The official changelog lists all improvements and changes that went into PeaZip 9.0. The developers have improved speed and memory usage of the applicatino, and cleaned up legacy code in the new release. According to the changelog, PeaZip 9.0 is "about 10% faster using 10% less memory opening 250K items archives". Values vary depending on the size of archive, but working with large archives is improved considerable resource-wise.

Speaking of which, adding files to archives or extract is now three times as fast as previously for some operations, including drag and dropping files). The developers have removed a performance bottleneck furthermore that affected the selection of a large list of items in the file browser.

PeaZip 9 does not support the modern context menu of Windows 11 by default, but Windows 11 users find options under C:\Program Files\PeaZip\res\share\batch\Windows 11 mini context menu to add entries to the modern context menu. The Registry files need to be executed on the Windows 11 device. A remove option is provided to remove all entries again.

PeaZip 9.6.0 introduces Profiles to separately store all configuration data (including preferences, bookmarks, custom apps, password manager, etc) for different users, or for different purposes, or to easily export the profile to another machine.

The application comes with enhanced GUI - with new optional compact sidebar, better smart sorting, new tab styles - and many under the hood improvements as improved extraction, and better handling of ARC files, and of archives containing errors in TOC.

This release also improves the ability to self-check the integrity of its binaries, including also libraries (.dll, .so, etc) and sfx modules.
