Rumors are flying today that a deal is imminent (possibly already signed) for Intel to switch from Nvidia to Radeon as the Graphics unit on their CPU's. The current Intel-Nvidia contract expires in March, and although there had been informal talks earlier in the year between AMD and Intel this was just thought to be Intel putting pressure on Nvidia to get a better price- but it seems that there may have been more to it.

This is a big boost for AMD whose stock was just about left for dead 12 moths ago. Since then it has risen from 1.86USD to 9.44USD today. Further, someone else has been implying that Micron tech (the RAM maker) may scoop up AMD to gain access to a broader market.

I'm personally happy for AMD if this stuff comes about. The universe would have been more lonely with only one maker of CPU's.

Probably a good move for intel cost wise but this will mean that intel probably doesn't see Amd competing with them on the cpu market or else they would not infuse them with cash and help them break theιr monopoly.
So in the end in might be sad news for cpu prices in the future.

As far as CPU are concerned, Intel has been taking share away from AMD since 2006 when they were about equal (yes, that actually was the case!); since then Intel has just surpassed 80% of the market although in this quarter the increase has stopped and leveled off. Where AMD has been gaining traction is in the GPU market where they have went from 18% to about 30% in the past year.

Nvidia must be shaking in their chips!

One of the best things that AMD did was getting rid of the Arch-fiend Hector Ruiz. He was more interested in maintaining his bonus at the expense of R&D (which he shredded). How he didn't go to jail for the insider tips on the Global Foundry spinoff is beyond me.

Fortunately AMD is now in the hands of a really smart person (a woman, of course), Lisa Su, who seems to be concentrating on the correct things. A really short article here: How AMD CEO Lisa Su Tripled the Chip Maker's Stock in 5 Months

Note that article is a bit old as the stock has risen from the 6USD/share to 9.56USD close today. And the increase in the GPU sales is massive in such a short time.

I'm interested in this question: will this make Intel chips run hotter again? ;)

Hopefully such partnership will happen again some time in the future as well .
They made a great console alternative .

That's super interesting and curious. It is strange though that Intel would be investing so heavily in improving their integrated graphics (the Ice Lake ones are at least twice as fast as previous Intel integrated) and still working on discrete cards if they just plan on using AMD IP.
