I wanted to mention, one can customize even further using dconf editor if they are comfortable tweaking in it. It is a stable platform, one i find most tools function properly on, which i can not say for a lot of distros. Installing Synaptic is a breeze, and any program you need from that point. I personally do not consider this DE ready to go out of the box, and the very first thing i do after updating is install synaptic and grab programs.

UALU, thank you for this review. I 'did' happen to find it both enjoyable and helpful particularly because the discussion about an environment I'd thought I already knew breathed even newer life into this reliable distro which we have quite similarly discovered to also be newer in 14.04 than 14.10 (barring those updates)!

Open your terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install synaptic

Click "Y" when prompted to install..

After it installs, you will find it under System/Administration
