Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.

It can be especially useful for cases where:
  • you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed
  • you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • you want to run a low-level utility
Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need!

Latest Build: 2.1 (2015.03.23) build 649
Release notes: https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/blob/master/ChangeLog.txt

Version 2.1 (2015.03.23)
  • Add 32 bit support to UEFI:NTFS boot
  • Add standalone UEFI:NTFS boot installation, in advanced mode
  • Add Vietnamese translation, courtesy of thanhtai2009
  • Disable support for ISOs that don't report their GRUB version (looking at you Kaspersky!)
  • Fix broken Windows UEFI installation when using GPT/NTFS
  • Fix creation of 32 bit UEFI Windows 10 installation flash drives
  • Other improvements

If your running Windows 7 you can use the free tool from Microsoft. This program is great for creating a Windows 8 usb drive or dvd. All you do is download, run as admin, run the program, select your iso, and the program does the rest. Website states .iso purchased from store but I have used it on downloaded .iso Win8.

The link to this tool in the OP states that it's twice as fast as microsofts offering.

8 minutes opposed to 3 minutes, and those times are according to their own figures (companies never lie right). I would personally rather use a tool from MS for MS than a company (1 person company) nobody has heard of.

I was just stating that the ms tool was already mentioned in the link of the OP. Sandboxie was once a 1 person company who nobody had heard of so your using faulty logic, but that's another discussion entirely.

Of course, the interest of providing timings for an operation that anybody can replicate, because details about the hardware and data used are open, is that it makes it very easy for anyone to validate them...
The figures have not been embellished - the MS tool is really that slow.

I would personally rather use a tool from MS for MS than a company (1 person company) nobody has heard of.
But now you've heard of me. ;)

RE: Rufus 1.2.0 - Create bootable USB drives

My best way of summarizing...

You heard of this thing, the 8-Minute Abs?
Yeah, sure, 8-Minute Abs. Yeah, the excercise video.
Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 7... Minute... Abs.
Right. Yes. OK, all right. I see where you're going.
Think about it. You walk into a video store, you see 8-Minute Abs sittin' there, there's 7-Minute Abs right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?
I would go for the 7.
Bingo, man, bingo. 7-Minute Abs. And we guarantee just as good a workout as the 8-minute folk.
You guarantee it? That's - how do you do that?
If you're not happy with the first 7 minutes, we're gonna send you the extra minute free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B".
That's right. That's - that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with 6-Minute Abs. Then you're in trouble, huh?

No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
That - good point.
7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
Why?
'Cause you're frickin' fired!

Accidentally damaged my USB memory stick by removing it during a format. While the Disk Management could see the drive, Windows Explorer could not.

I opened up Rufus and selected the first Advanced Option (as seen below) -

Took less than 20 seconds to fix and now it's once again, listed under Windows/File Explorer.

Rufus has proven to be more than useful. :D

You could do it also with HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml

Rufus i good tool, but only for 1 iso

Thanks, but I was sharing my successful experience with Rufus. I believe Rufus is the better tool, plus it's updated regularly and it's one of my must-have portable tools. :D

You can't actually compare what is better because Rufus is bootable usb creator tool and you needed a tool just to format the USB drive, you could do it with Easeus, Aomei, Minitool, maybe any good partition manager could see unpartitioned or wrongly partitioned space on USB drive.
Once again, Rufus is great tool but only if you work with one ISO :D

Could you explain the part of "work with one ISO"?

It is not possible to create multiboot usb with Rufus, you can only work with one iso file, like unetbootin does.
Not like YUMI,RMprepUSB or Sardu which are more powerful tools in my opinion

Can you give some examples for a multi-boot USB? I don't quite understand it's purpose. Thanks. :D

For example YUMI, XBoot or Sardu are used to create multiboot usb drive, creating usb bootable with several iso files, for example Kaspersky Rescue Disk. Hirens Boot, Wondershare LiveBoot and Minitool Partition Wizard on the same USB drive... You can choose what iso you want to boot, you can also add and Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 installation iso's to the usb.
The purpose is that I want to create ultimate USB bootable drive able to restore/reset Windows password, Have an ultimate backup manager, like Macrium Reflect, EaseUs Todo BackUp, Aomei Backuper or such, good partition manager like acronis, easeus or minitool partition manager, Ultimate Boot CD or Hirens Boot cd, and some Antivirus Rescue Cd like Kaspersky Rescue Disk, Avira, Dr.web or such on the same USB drive :D

Cheers for the explanation. At the moment I have no use for creating multi-bootable USB drives. I tend to use once-only before replacing the 8GB USB drives' content with something else.
