I won't be going on the deep web for anything illegal, just for viewing things like forums. Would it be safe if I used Xubuntu in VirtualBox? Would any malware be able to get through the virtual machine? Is there anything I should do different?

P.S I would prefer to avoid using a Live USB. I'm aware it's the safest way to do things, but I would find it annoying to always have to switch between operating systems for different tasks. I would rather be able to seamlessly switch between Tor and anything else I want to do.

You want to go to DeepWeb or DarkNet? Those are two other terms. You have to inform yourself about this topic first. Instead of starting Xubuntu in a VM you can start Tails. Tails via live USB is still the most secure. However, I have to say that DarkNet has a bad reputation and everyone claims that there are viruses. A guest account in Windows with Tor Browser would work in the worst case.

Yes, one of the great threats is the ecosystem that the Dark Net has created. Today, criminals can specialise in one service and sell it on a wider market. Since most of them use a pay-per-success or pay-per-install policy, launching an attack is also cheaper. When they find a technique that gives results, they can repeat it and even resell it. The speed of transactions and often the lack of specialistic skills, make difficult to identify these threats.
