Advice Request SecuPerts Anti-Spy Question

Hi, I am just wondering how SecuPerts Anti-Spy works. Does it have to run in the background when the computer is running or is a just a 'one time' click thing and it changes the settings on the computer? Because I clicked the X on the program and I can't see it running in task manager so I wonder if it is still working. Because I got a free licence from a giveaway and how would the program ask you for renewal after the 1 year if the program isn't open running in the processes. Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.
