If you don't need it, then disable it. Either you are using Private networking or enabled network discovery for the Public network profile.

I do not really understand what it does.. is there any harm in letting it stay enabled?

All it does is allow you to connect to other PCs. If you are not doing this, then disable it for the sake of increased network security. If you are not connecting to any other PCs in your home, set Windows Firewall to Public.

Thanks for the info, I always wanted to know which one is better and safe.
So if I'm in the house and I don't have anything to share with others or don't want to connect with others the public network is the safest right?
