1. 1st of all, there are Free AVs except for suport those are equivalent to Paid products.
2. If you use to download cracked softwares and you install them by disabling security no antivirus can protect you.
3. If you use only to download movies then any popular antivirus can protect you. :p

Nobody should rely on their AV (free or paid) to protect their PC, as infections can be caused by human error.

Torrents are not dangerous files, unless modified or not what they are (ie. bundled with Adware).

I think it depends how experienced you are. Are you using public or private trackers? There's a big difference imo.
If you're downloading cracked software and such things, I don't think there's a big difference. Almost every crack will be caught by avast (free) or eset (paid)

Another thing, that is worth mentioning that I had best experience with kaspersky. It clearly says with is a virus and what is a "harmless" crack. It won't automatically delete/quarantine things like eset, norton..

If you're downloading movies, I don't think there is no need for any AV. You must be reeeaal noob to get infected just by downloading a movie. :D

But again: read the first sentence ;)

Good 4 tricks are:
No movie ends with .exe (e.g:.mp4.exe)
No movie name is: (e.g:"the movie you downloaded")
Adblocker is a good way to protect from malicious ads, there are tons in torrent websites
No movie is less than 100mb (yourmovie.mp4.exe; size:3mb)

I think your best defence against malware is the crowd, look at the comments of the torrent before you decide if it's worth downloading. Most of the time people would comment and rate it very poorly if they find the torrent to be malicious, or have good comments if the torrent is safe to their knowledge. Bitdefender seems to be cool with cracked software, I know Emsisoft picks up cracked software from my experiences using their emergency kit. But generally they are differentiated by the AV as cracked software/riskware and viruses.

Bottom line, if something looks fishy, it probably is and you shouldn't download it.

Yes you can rely on some free antivirus products.
You should be careful while downloading files using torrent. Only download torrent from a popular torrent website so that there is less chance that you end up downloading malware.

It's important to note that most *cracks* or *patches* aren't viruses. They are program codes to alter the main program, removing the restrictions, so that you can play the game or software without licensing. Since program code alteration is involved, this is the reason why antiviruses incorrectly flag it as a *virus*.

Illegal torrents should be considered for evaluation purposes only. Indie game companies don't complain about it, because if there weren't these torrents many of their games wouldn't have been noticed that much.

Hence the need for a program like Toolwiz Timefreeze, which incidently Titan1 is totally free.(as starchild76 has already pointed out)
