Were you looking forward to finally trying out the countless Skyrim mods on your PlayStation 4? Or maybe you were itching to try out some Fallout 4 mods on your Sony console? In either of those cases, Bethesda says you’re out of luck – but it’s not the publisher’s fault, it’s Sony’s.

Earlier this year, Bethesda announced, to its fans’ delight, that it was looking to allow mods for Fallout 4 on consoles. Later, the game maker announced a remastered edition of Skyrim, one that would bring user mods to consoles. In other words, those relying on Microsoft’s or Sony’s boxes would finally get some of the features that PC gamers had always held over their heads. Unfortunately, it looks like that optimism was misplaced, at least on Sony’s side of the aisle.

In a post on its website, Bethesda announced today that the console-maker won’t allow mods on its PlayStation, at least not “the way they should work”. This effectively makes mods for Fallout 4 and Skyrim Xbox exclusives at this point. Bethesda expressed how frustrating the decision is:

Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience.

Given how popular Bethesda titles are, and how mods have kept the community passionately engaged with those titles, many users are questioning Sony’s judgement here. However, until the company - which recently announced a refresh and an upgrade for its PlayStation consoles - reconsiders, there’s not much that gamers can do.
