Beginning later this year, Premium subscribers in select markets will be able to upgrade their sound quality to Spotify HiFi and listen to their favorite songs the way artists intended.

So far, we know that the HiFi subscribers will be able to consume “music in lossless audio format, with CD quality”. Given that bitrates for lossless audio can be around 1411kbps, Spotify HiFi should be a big step up from existing Spotify Premium quality, which maxes out at only 320kbps. In case you didn't know (where have you been?), Spotify HiFi is the ubiquitous music streaming service's long-anticipated entry into CD-quality streaming. It was initially teased in 2017 and promptly disappeared from consciousness.

Then, on 22nd February 2021, the company officially announced Spotify HiFi to the world at its 'Stream On' event, but this time it promised the tier would be with us by the end of the year. A leaked video and a cheeky icon glimpse in the iOS app gave us our first look at HiFi in the wild. Things were looking good.

Since then we have been mostly waiting. And waiting. At the time of writing, Spotify has less than 10 days to make good on its promise.

When (if?) HiFi launches, Spotify Premium subscribers will be able to 'upgrade' their membership so they can listen to higher-quality streams, although said streams still won't be 'hi-res' quality (generally defined as anything above CD-quality) the kind that are already offered by rivals Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon and, since June 2021, Apple Music.

The firm is in "constant dialogue" with partners

When will Spotify's long-promised HiFi tier finally launch? Don't ask Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, as he has admitted even he doesn't know.

Speaking on an earnings call to analysts and investors (via 9to5Mac), Ek said that the tier's launch is being held up because of the licensing process. He didn't commit to any launch timeframe (not even confirming that the service would launch this year), only saying that Spotify was in "constant dialogue" with music labels about bringing the feature to market.

Spotify first announced the feature almost exactly a year ago, promising that it would launch later in 2021. Last month, it issued a statement saying it didn't "have timing details to share yet" (essentially confirming it had been delayed indefinitely). Ek's latest comments cement that, and say to users: don't hold your breath.

Even though Spotify HiFi still hasn’t launched after being announced more than two years ago, some kind of lossless experience is still on the way, Spotify co-president Gustav Söderström said in an interview with The Verge. But don’t get your hopes up for any specific information about when.

The Verge has recently learned that Spotify HiFi has been ready to go for more than a year. The technical work to bring the feature to market is largely complete, and the company has re-ingested its entire music catalog in lossless quality. Spotify employees have access to HiFi. But since it was originally intended to cost more than the standard plan, the launch was spoiled by Apple bundling lossless into Apple Music for free.

Spotify is reportedly planning to include lossless audio streaming in a new, more expensive subscription tier codenamed “Supremium” internally, according to Bloomberg. The lossless streaming feature was first announced in February 2021 as “Spotify HiFi,” but is still yet to release over two years later. Bloomberg reports that the new more expensive plan could release later this year, initially in non-US markets.

In a statement emailed to The Verge, Spotify spokesperson Laura Pezzini said, “At Spotify, we are constantly iterating and ideating to improve our product offering and offer value to users. But we don’t comment on speculation around possible new features and do not have anything new to share at this time.”

Not sure if this has been covered at all, but I did a little digging within the Spotify app, and found info about the new, more expensive Supremium, which Spotify refers to as "Nemo" internally.

The new plan includes:

• 24-bit Lossless music (they don't refer to it as Hifi anymore)
  • They claim that "their technology has no lag and delays"
• Ability to make playlists with AI
• 30h of audiobook listening every month
  • "Access to included audiobooks listening hours is only available to plan managers of Individual, Duo, and Family plans"
• Ability to filter your library by mood, activity and genre
• Advanced mixing tools
  • Customize the order of a playlist by BPM or danceability, or use "smart order" to create the best sequence using key and tempo
  • Enable smooth transitions which uses set cue points to seamlessly transition between tracks
  • Filter by moods and genres in a playlist
• Soundcheck: tells you about your listening habits and discover what mix of sounds is "uniquely you"

EDIT: After more digging in the code, the price seems to be $19.99. This could just be a placeholder.
