I think he was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer even before then. Probably the reason why he left the company.

My uncle died a month ago at 55 years, from the same disease as Jobs.Cancer is a real nightmare.... and like we've seen today , all the money in the world can't save you.
We all know the accomplishments of Jobs, and today it's a sad day..... RIP.

I am not 100% positive, but I believe that he had pancreatic cancer, which is very tough to beat, esp. if you have a rare form of it. When I saw that picture of him that was released just after he announced that he was leaving Apple, I knew the poor guy was in trouble.

I loved to hate Apple, but I always admired and respected their stability, growth, and products. I knew Steve was brilliant. When I learned and saw how ill he looked, I toned it down. I had no idea.
You know how we choose sides; Ford vs. Chevy--Honda vs. Toyota--Microsoft vs. Apple, etc. It was all in good stubborn fun. I know Steve liked to participate in that too. He was proud, and rightfully so.

Very interesting video to watch,Steve Jobs talking about his life in a inspiring speech :

Microsoft co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates released the following statement on Wednesday’s death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs:

Bill Gates said:
I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

Also on Amazon the not even released Steve Jobs biography is No. 1 in the pre-orders. - link
