The IT community is well aware of metadata -- it's everywhere, on everything. However, we might not think as often of the implications when it comes to issues outside of the daily grind.

For example, the New York police officer who "violently" arrested a journalist for taking a photo that he said "blinded him" with the flash, only to be arrested himself alter on for falsifying this claim. The metadata showed the photo was not taken with a flash.
Furthermore, the turning of suspicion into conviction, and even more harrowing, "killing people" based on it (a former NSA director is quoted as saying “We kill people based on metadata" according to the author.)

My feeling is that metadata can and is used for good, not only by companies but also by individuals -- however, within it lies the potential for great misuse.
