The hacker and security researcher who goes by the name Moxie Marlinspike has spent the last years building a few of the most noteworthy recent inventions in applied cryptography, some independently and some for his mobile security startup, Whisper Systems. Now it seems he’ll be building them for an unlikely new boss: Twitter.
Whisper Systems announced Monday that it’s been acquired by Twitter, though Twitter hasn’t confirmed the deal or offered any information about its size or terms. I’ve put in a request with Twitter and Whisper Systems for more information and will update this post when I learn more.
Update: Twitter confirms that it’s acquiring Whisper, but won’t say much about its intentions or anything about the terms of the deal. “The Whisper Systems team is joining Twitter starting today,” reads a statement from the company. “As part of our fast-growing engineering team, they will be bringing their technology and security expertise to Twitter’s products and services. We’re happy to have Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson onboard.”
