UMBRELLA: SECURITY THAT WORKS WHERE YOUR USERS DO
Finally, there is a Cloud-based security service that is easy to deploy and manage for admins, and delivers a great experience with better performance and decreased latency for end-users.

With cutting-edge malware, botnet and phishing protection, Umbrella Security is protecting users wherever they are regardless of location, device or network connection.

Yea me too...

How does Umbrella
Everywhere/Mobility work?
• Unlike security products that reduce performance by backhauling traffic through
hardware appliances or slow VPNs, Umbrella actually improves performance with a
lightweight combination of DNS traffic routing and selective proxying.
• To use Umbrella Everywhere, networks need only route external queries via the
OpenDNS Global Network by pointing to our Anycast IP address.
For Users with Mobile Devices – Umbrella Everywhere protects users with iPhones
and iPads. In this case, a 3-click-to-install configuration file directs the iOS device to
connect to the nearest, most available data center on the OpenDNS Global Network
via a secure channel via VPN. This enables Umbrella Everywhere to enforce policy for
all Internet traffic to and from the device, including web browsing, and other non-web
apps such as file sharing (P2P/FTP) or chat (IM/VoIP).
o Admin push – Using the Umbrella Dashboard, enter a list of email addresses, which
sends the config file that users install on their devices to set up the Umbrella VPN.
o User pull – The user installs the Umbrella app from iTunes. Using the app, the user
can register, download and install the config file to set up the Umbrella VPN.
For Nomadic Users with Laptops – Umbrella Everywhere covers the user who leaves
the enterprise network and connects her laptop at a café hotspot or other untrusted
network. A lightweight, downloadable, 3-click-to-install agent on the user’s laptop
routes traffic via secure channel using encrypted DNS to the nearest data center on
the OpenDNS Global Network. It provides visibility and control of all Internet activity.

I can explain this service since I have it both at home and at work. While yes the Umbrella Professional and up services are for businesses, there is a service called Umbrella Prosumer, which works great as a home user service and does a great, best I have ever seen job of blocking bad sites for home users. "Umbrella Prosumer uses OpenDNS’s lightweight agents to protect up to three devices (per licensed user) running Windows, Mac OSX or iOS anywhere, anytime. Umbrella Prosumer provides all the same benefits and threat protection as Umbrella Professional, except for the ability to provision network-wide coverage".
"
Source:https://www.opendns.com/enterprise-security/packages/ I highly recommend it as long as you don't mind spending the $20 a year that it costs as I have tested it and it is much better then their(OpenDNS's) free service.

Hi Yes, Free version: mostly blocks sites based on category such as Porn, Web Spam, Adware, Parked Domains and so on but does not offer nearly the level of protection against malware sites, for example it does not block any malware sites in my testing, it only does this:
Malware/Botnet Protection
Enable basic malware/botnet protection

When certain Internet-scale botnets are discovered or particularly malicious malware hits, we offer protection to all our users so that as many people as possible can be protected from the threat. At this time, this feature blocks the Conficker virus and the Internet Explorer Zero Day Exploit, and is continually expanded to include other types of malicious sites.

Phishing Protection
Enable phishing protection

By enabling phishing protection, you’ll protect everyone on your network from known phishing sites using the best data available.

Suspicious Responses
Block internal IP addresses

When enabled, DNS responses containing IP addresses listed in RFC1918 will be filtered out. This helps to prevent DNS Rebinding attacks. For example, if badstuff.attacker.com points to 192.168.1.1, this option would filter out that response.

The three blocks of IP addresses filtered in responses are:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12)
Which is just basic protection but does not block any actual malware sites as far as I can tell despite the description above. Also the paid one has full log reports telling you which sites where blocked, how many malware and botnet attempts where made/blocked on your computer. The free one also does not use a roaming client.
The Paid Version blocked a huge amount of malware sites directly that the free version does not: Also you get the Umbrella dashboard with the paid one and not with the free one, this dashboard is much more feature rich and gives you much more info. Also the paid version has categories of blocked sites and protection such as: 1. block malware 2. block drive by downloads/exploits 3. block botnet 4. block phishing (Though I think the free one may do this also) and 5. block high risk sites and locations, I believe that 4 of these 5 are only included in the paid version, as I could not find any of those 4 in the free versions settings. Sorry if this post comes across hard to read. I hope I explained this well as it is hard without you just seeing them both work compared to each other as I have as I used the free one for 6 months before I got the paid one Prosumer. I think their database of malware sites is by far the best I have ever seen as I mentioned before but not in their free version as that does not have the malware sites blocking as the paid one does, not counting phishing sites blocking, so to me that is the biggest difference, but I also like the logs that tell me everything that it blocked malware site wise. Also I have compared Prosumer to both Norton DNS and Comodo secure DNS and those block almost nothing in my testing combined in comparison to Prosumer by OpenDNS, but they are free and better then nothing and they do block malware sites but just not any where near the level of Prosumer does. I hope this post was not too long and repeating for you. Thanks for your interest in what I wrote.
