Been looking at these two for a while, both Viber and WhatsApp look like a great alternate to Skype.

Here are some links to their sites:
Viber - https://www.viber.com
WhatsApp - https://www.whatsapp.com (Free for 1 year)

Using the Poll, you can vote for which one you use - if you don't use either you sit on the side. :p

If you use both, could you explain which product has the edge over the other one.

I use both. Viber is more flexible and allows calls, while Whatsapp not. The big PRO of whatsapp is basically that is more popular among my contacts.
A side note: Viber uses Google Analytics, which is set on be default. I suggest to disable this data collection.

There are also other players, like Line and Wechat. I tested them for a while but then I decided to drop them (they are just clones) and use only those 2 plus Wickr, for sensitive messages (however nearly nobody uses Wickr, despite its superior security and privacy capabilities).

Thanks for the reply. I looked at Wickr, but it's not available for WP8 (darn!), and I have already turned off Google Analytics in Viber.

A positive for Viber is it's multi-platform availability, a bit like Skype, but as you've said WhatsApp is more popular. I'll keep both for the time being and see how things go.

Another option to enjoy secure IM is Chatsecure (Ios, android). You need to create a XMPP account (easy task) and then you can also chat from your PC using Jitsi or Pidgin, etc. It's a bit less easy to use/configure than Whatsapp/Viber etc, but in case of confidential chats might be a good choice.

I prefer Viber. I have it on my phone, both Linux partitions and on OS X. Great app.

Thanks for the input, however instead of wasting time to make contacts to switch/add Viber. I uninstalled and am keeping Skype and WhatsApp only.
