So if you run a malware inside a VMware virtual machine can it get into your real pc?

There are some viruses that can slip out of a VM, but pretty rare right now. Although i can strongly recommend Shadow Defender or Toolwiz TimeFreeze being active on the host system.

If you have Shared folders make them read-only, otherwise malware (Ransomware, Cryptolocker, etc.) will get to your host machine over it.

Always use the latest updates as well to keep security leaks at a minimum :)

No however VM software like all software has its vulnerabilities which can be exploited.
Most malware that detects a VM is to twart the testing of it and like @Secondmineboy said above a virus infecting the host machine has not been seen or is rare.
You should follow some simple rules however:
Use a completely different operating system for the host and for the guest.
Running a machine infected in VM with access to your network opens you up to potential risks
Common sense such as not using the infected system to do anything personal such as online banking
