What is good between VMWARE Workstation Pro vs VirtualBox ? I'm using both. Installed Vmware Workstation Pro ( Free downloaded from Broadcom ) & VirtualBox but VirtualBox doesn't have built in update feature. I have to manually download & install it when update is available. Vmware built in update showing error. Performance wise VirtualBox stucked few times & addtional files need to download & install to run smoothly. I mainly use Vmware or virtualBox to running Linux OS & sometimes Windows also. Another question is my Windows is installed on C drive ( SSD ) & D drive is HDD. Both application is installed on C drive. Now to save Vmware / VirtualBox host file, which drive should I use ? If I use D drive ( HDD ) I think it cause slow performance but also wonder that if I use C drive ( SSD ), performance of the host will better but if it will harm SSD performance.

Please suggest me. Sorry for my detailed query. Thanks in advance.

Both VMWare Workstation Pro and VirtualBox have their own strengths. VMWare is known for its robustness and wide range of features, while VirtualBox is appreciated for its simplicity and being free. Regarding updates, VMWare's built-in update feature is usually reliable, but errors can occur. For VirtualBox, manual updates are indeed required.

Performance can vary depending on the system, but generally, VMWare tends to be smoother. If you're experiencing issues with VirtualBox, ensure you have the latest version and necessary extensions installed.

As for where to save your VM files, using the SSD (C drive) will indeed offer better performance. However, it might wear out the SSD faster due to numerous read/write operations. Balancing between performance and longevity is key, and it depends on your specific needs and priorities.

So what's the solution ?
The solution depends on your needs. If performance is your top priority, save the VM files on the SSD. If longevity is more important, use the HDD. Alternatively, you could use the SSD for frequently used VMs and the HDD for less critical ones. Regular backups can also help mitigate any potential loss from SSD wear.

Even VMware now needs to be downloaded manually, not just manually you need to create an account to download.

The bot is correct on other things. Vmware's performance is better than VirtualBox.
On SSD vs HDD, SSD for better performance and there will be a lot of disk writes as you will be using a full OS on a VM. On HDD you don't need to worry about disk writes but the of course the performance would be much slower.

You need to decide what you want. I put mines on HDD.

So if I put Linux VM host files on HDD I think it slower but okay to use Linux OS? Can I save vm host on external HDD?

I recall this was discussed several days ago, but I forget as I got "lost" in creating VMw account as I already have / should have one... I have 17.6.3 build-24583834 is this current? or I very vaguely recall 17.6.3.1 but could not confirm that with VMw. Since VMw update is no longer working how does user know if there's an update? (other than someone posting here :)) Can you check version status without having to login VMw?

EDIT update so I went to broadcom and when I try to use my account (email originally used for paid Workstation) it says locked -- email, but they do not send a message to that email) so then try to create a new account with different email and it says there is already a user with that email address. Probably me although my notes are perhaps unclear...??
Basically it is one be big snafu circular loop and I get nowhere. Clueless here with 17.6.3

It's strange that your account got locked without any notice.
Yes, 17.6.3-24583834 is still the latest build and there seems to be no other way of knowing than to manually look for changelog for a new version or wait for someone to post here on MT.

I suppose I can try to create a new 3d account, but since I am current with 17.6.3 I can wait...

according to chatGPT not "strange" apparently common, so after 3 hours of mucking around at Broadcom -- I decided to create a new 3d account to get access and I used a perfectly good (paid) email address and got

The domain #######.com has been flagged as a restricted domain. If you wish to continue to register, please use another domain. If this domain is wrongly restricted, please reach out to your Broadcom contact or the Broadcom customer care team.
Use of a shared email account or a distribution list (PDL) is a security risk and a violation of the Terms of Use for this Site.
but catch-22 > you cannot (it seems) contact Broadcom customer care team unless you are logged into your account. I tried an email address for them and it went 404. After sending an email to my "flagged email provider," I asked chatGPT w_t_f, and it (he) said try using gmail email account, and Broadcom liked that, so now I think I have access, but won't know for sure until I test it tomorrow ie now 3h30 my local time and past my bedtime.
