I have experienced many issues with Outlook for Android (Microsoft) app, so currently using the built-in Email client on my Xperia Tablet.

Other than Gmail, what is a reliable email app to receive emails from my Outlook.com account, on Android?

I know you said other than Gmail, but Gmail + Gmailify is fantastic for Outlook.

Otherwise, I've heard decent things about TypeApp, K-9, and Newton. I believe Newton might be subscription based.

I use myMail on Android. I've tried a lot of different email apps over the past few years and ended up settling on myMail. Like the UI, find it simple to use and I've never had an issue with it.

ProtonMail now has an Android email app ;)
I use it.
Can you add third-party services to the ProtonMail client?

Although I am not really looking to make more email accounts, just something for Outlook to work in without costing a penny.
