Generally is different from always. There are many undocumented changes made in the Windows kernel - most of them are security-related (PatchGuard, Low-level APIs, etc.). Generally, Defender is the most compatible AV with Windows 10. Although there are a few (paid) AVs for home users that are better than Defender free, the above conclusion is not universally true in the home environment. There is no objective evidence for such a statement. Many (rather) objective tests made by the known AV testing Labs are more convincing than any personal opinion based on personal experience. See for example: https://malwaretips.com/threads/the-best-home-av-protection-2019-2020.106485/ There are people who prefer Defender instead of 3rd party AVs when considering an impact on the PC. This can depend on many factors and the term "impact on the PC" can have a different meaning for different people (even for different AV testing Labs).
