Under no circumstance would I recommend to a user to go without real-time AV protection. There are so many other options to consider: 1. Pick an AV that is light on resources like Avast, Avira or Eset. 2. If you have folders with a lot of files that you know are safe, exclude them from your AV real-time protection. So when you open these folders you will not experience any slow downs in response time. 3. Never download files or move files to the excluded folder before checking them for malware. Recommend to use VirusTotal right click scanners. 4. Limit your system startup processes to only necessary items because they will be less to scan at system startup. There are many free tools that can do this like WinPatrol. 5. Add all safe system startup processes to your real-time AV's exclusion list. That way it will not have to scan these safe processes with every boot. 6. Manually add all of your most used safe programs to your AV's exclusion list. Note: before adding any folders or files to your AV's real-time exclusion list you need to make sure that they are safe. After doing these actions your real-time AV will be a lot more lighter. Enjoy!!:D
