Microsoft has released its Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2 (KB5034765). It's the same KB update for both versions of Windows but depending on which version you have, you'll land on a different Build number, either 22621.3155 or 22631.3155.

Highlights

  • New! The Copilot in Windows icon now appears on the right side of the system tray on the taskbar. Also, the display of Show desktop at the rightmost corner of the taskbar will be off by default. To turn it back on, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. You can alsoright-click the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings. Note: Windows 11 devices will get this new functionality at different times. Some of these new features roll out gradually using controlled feature rollout (CFR) to consumers.
  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

I got freaked out a bit after updating and restarting. My secondary drive, with all my multimedia, wasn't recognized. It came back after restarted again, but it was a bit scary.

The shutdown errors that I was receiving with the preview update have returned with this update.

Windows 11 KB5034765 reportedly breaks taskbar, causing it to disappear

According to various reports on Reddit and Microsoft's Feedback Hub, KB5034765 breaks Windows 11 by leaving blank space where its taskbar usually resides. As a result, affected customers cannot launch pinned apps, switch between running applications, access the Quick Setting menu, check the notification area, and more. In Windows, the taskbar is a cornerstone of the user interface, so losing access to it is a big problem.

Microsoft has not acknowledged the problem yet. Therefore, affected users need to figure out the problem and fix their computers without specific guides or workarounds from the Windows maker. Fortunately, it seems that you do not need deep knowledge of Windows to mend your system. Uninstalling KB5034765 helped some users resolve the problem.

One of the users on Reddit suggested this step, and now, Microsoft has mentioned detailed steps on its Learn website. Here is what you have to do:
Below are two possible ways to delete the C:\$WinREAgent folder.
1) Manually delete the folder: To delete a hidden folder in Windows 11, you need to first make the folder visible and then delete it.
  1. Open File Explorer from the Taskbar, or by pressing Windows key + E.
  2. Click on the three-dotted icon and select Options.
  3. Go to the View tab and select the Show hidden files, folders, and drives option. Click the OK button to save the change.
  4. Now, you should be able to see the hidden folder C:\$WinREAgent in File Explorer. Right-click the hidden folder C:\$WinREAgent and select Delete.
2) Run a script to delete the folder:
  1. Open the start menu and type command prompt.
  2. From the results displayed at the right side of the start menu, select ‘Run as administrator’.
  3. On the command prompt, type the command rd /s /q “C:\$WinREAgent” and press enter.
  4. If no message is displayed, it means the command has succeeded, and the folder has been deleted. You can proceed to close the command prompt window.
Note that a message is only displayed if an error was encountered. In this case, we recommend deleting the folder manually.
Microsoft also mentioned that this is a temporary fix, and they’re working on a resolution for the problem and will provide an update in the next release.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 KB5035853 fixes KB5034765 "0x800F0922" install bug

Microsoft released Patch Tuesday updates on Windows 10 and Windows 11 for March 2024. The updates for the latest versions of Windows were delivered via KB5035845 and KB5035853, respectively.

With the latter, aside from security patches, Microsoft has fixed an issue which was causing installation problems with the previous Windows 11 Patch Tuesday release (KB5034765). On affected systems, it would display a "0x800F0922" error message and fail at around 96%. At the time, Microsoft could not quite get to the bottom of the issue but did provide a detailed workaround.

On the patch notes, the company says:
This update addresses a known issue that might affect the February 2024 security and preview updates. They might not install, and your device might stop responding at 96%. The error code is "0x800F0922.” The error message is, “Something did not go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes. Please keep your computer on.”
