Microsoft announced Windows 8.1 officially a while back, stating that the new version of the desktop and tablet operating system will be offered as a free update to existing users of Windows 8 through the Windows Store. We even brought you details of what was new in the new version of the OS, and as it turned out, there was quite some new stuff to celebrate. Now, it seems the Redmond company is taking a slightly different approach, making available the Preview version for Windows 8.1 to all users.

The new version is pretty stable, and if you’re running Windows 8, you may grab it right now. However, do understand that since it’s a preview version, it may not be advisable to use it as a daily driver for your primary PC. That said, we know that you’re the adventurous type, so here you go.

Was just about to post as well. :P

Seeing the dual snap for metro apps, I'm wishing they'd add Floating Apps windows (ie. miniaturised apps) for Windows 8.2/NEXT.

Edit: Similar to the Weather app on the Start, but for floating on the Desktop.

I can't access the download site, as soon as I hit download the next page doesn't load. I can only assume adblock is blocking it. This is happening on Chrome, Ghostery is blocking it on FF and I think tracking protection lists are blocking it on IE.

Working fine with only AdBlock on Chrome.

Go InPrivate or Incognito,
1. Install the Windows Standalone Update
2. Restart
3. Windows Store will open with Windows 8.1 Preview
4. Download is 2.44GB

This Windows 8 business must have been designed by a mental patient. Navigation so scrambled and non-intuitive - it had to be someone deranged. No insult to mental patients - you aren't craping up my digital life. Let my son take a test drive with it, and in less than 5 mins. he switched back to the desk top. IE Metro is slow, LastPass app disappears when you want to open another site, knocks off internet connection 4 times yesterday.....wow, just wow! Desktop works just fine.

Imran,
Try changing your locale language, as others are facing a similar problem (see below):

Else wait for the Windows 8.1 Preview ISO release, expected today (27 June).

Some useful info:

Do I need a product key to install Windows 8.1 Preview?
If you install Windows 8.1 Preview through the Windows Store, you don't need a product key. If you download the ISO, you'll need to enter this product key: NTTX3-RV7VB-T7X7F-WQYYY-9Y92F.

I also read somewhere that Media Center needs to be re-installed after the 8.1 Preview upgrade for ISO installations.

Does this mean the RTM of Windows 8.1 will be anything from 2.4GB to 3.3GB for the English x64 version? If so, that's one HUGE update. :dodgy:
