Even though more and more analysts suggest that Windows 8 is recording disappointing sales, data released by Chitika Insights indicates that Microsoft’s new OS is quickly increasing its market share.

The latest figures reveal that Windows 8 has accounted for 2.3 percent of all Windows traffic 48 days after its public release, but it’s still far from the other Windows versions currently on the market.

Windows 7, for example, remains the top choice with a record 59.5 percent, while Windows XP comes second with 27.1 percent. Surprisingly, 11.1 percent of the users are still running Windows Vista.

Chitika said that Windows 8 reached its highest market share this month, which does nothing more than to confirm that Microsoft’s new Windows platform is very likely to skyrocket in early 2013 when the PC sector is also expected to post a significant recovery.

Its market share seems showing a trend more similar to the +1%/month of Vista than the +2%/month of 7.
If we consider that it aims to a wider audience (tablets, smartphones), that it is sold at a far lower price tag than Vista and 7, that XP machines needs to be replaced right now, that pc sales collapsed after 8 release, that RT preorder have been cut by 50%, it seems not very good data for MS.

Personally, people with Windows XP should just get a free upgrade to something higher than Windows 7 Basic.

Agree.
If MS is going to be increasingly a "services and devices" company like Ballmer said, it would reasonable to offer free upgrades - but I think it would be more in tune with their business plans to push W8 in all possible ways rather than 7, but still I think 7 would be a better system for most users.

Only for the reason that most people have no upgrade to a touch compatible PC. Give it another 5 years and "normal" users will have. Not sure about tech savvy people though, they already have it on their non-touch PC's. :p
