New Update Windows Insider: Photos app gets background remove and more

As Panos mentioned in his blog post yesterday, we will be releasing an update to the Photos app in Windows 11 that introduces a new photos-managing experience. We are beginning to roll a preview of this update for the Photos app to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel today. This means not all Insiders in the Dev Channel will have the update right away, but we plan to increase the rollout over time as we monitor feedback.


The update brings a gorgeous gallery, simplifying browsing, finding, management and consumption of your collection of photos. It also allows you to easily backup your photos with OneDrive, enjoy powerful experiences on Windows devices and offers a delightful “Memories” experience.

Here are some things for Insiders try with this Photos app update:

This update to the Photos app (version 2022.31090.16004.0 and higher) will replace the current Photos app experience. Earlier this year, we introduced Clipchamp as our new inbox video editor, which is focused on making video creation easy, fast, and fun on Windows. As Clipchamp is equipped with all the basic tools you’d expect, like trimming and splitting, as well as more pro-style features like transitions and animated text, the new Photos app experience no longer includes the legacy Video Editor. If you would prefer to continue to use the legacy Photos app, it will remain available in the Microsoft Store.

Hello Windows Insiders, The Photos app in Windows 11 lets you view, organize, and share photos from your PC, OneDrive, and iCloud. Today, we begin to roll out an update to the Photos app to Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. This update includes a broad set of new features, improvements, and fixes based on feedback. With this update, we are introducing:

New Slideshow Experience ​

This was a top feature request we received from the community since launching the new Photos app in Windows 11 last Fall. You can now relive your memories and view photos in a slideshow format, complete with transitions, animations, and 25 original music soundtracks to choose from. Click on any photo to start the slideshow or choose multiple photos to watch them together.

Timeline Scrollbar ​

This was another top feature request. We are re-introducing the timeline scrollbar to the All Photos, OneDrive, and iCloud Photos gallery views which groups photos by year and month. With the scrollbar, you can now easily jump to any point in time and find the photos you want.

Spot Fix ​

Use the Spot Fix feature to remove blemishes or unwanted areas in your photo.

Other Fixes and Improvements​

• Auto Enhance is now available for use without having to install the 93MB add-on.
• When importing photos from external devices, you can now drag and drop to choose the photos you want and use the quick toggle to confirm the files that have been selected.
• Hidden iCloud Photos will no longer display in the gallery.
• Fixed an issue where audio on video files is muted by default. The app now plays the audio by default and persists user settings across videos.
• Copying and pasting a photo from the Photos app into Outlook and Teams now inserts the image inline by default instead of adding an attachment.
• Multi-select photos: hold down the SHIFT key while selecting photos in the gallery now selects multiple consecutive photos in a row; holding down the CTRL key selects multiple non-consecutive photos.

Hello Windows Insiders, With this update, we're rolling out more background edit capabilities. We've also added other improvements and fixes based on your feedback.

Background Remove and Replace​

In our last update, we launched a new background blur feature. Now we're introducing the ability to easily remove the background in your photo or replace it with a different color. With a single click, you can remove the background and save the resulting image or copy it to the clipboard. Use the color picker to select the right hue, either by clicking on the palette, entering a hex color code, or setting the RGB values. Filmstrip​

The Filmstrip of thumbnails at the bottom of each photo was designed to enable a quick preview of other photos in the same folder and allow you to easily select multiple photos for comparison and review. Based on your feedback, we have redesigned the Filmstrip experience:

• By default, Filmstrip is turned off when opening a photo.
• To turn on Filmstrip, press the "F" key or click on the icon in the bottom left corner.
• To enable the best viewing experience and improve usability, we have moved Filmstrip below the photo, enlarged the thumbnails, and added a larger scrollbar at the bottom so it's easier to navigate and select the photo you're looking for.

Timeline Scrollbar​

We have added the Timeline Scrollbar to all folders and made it dynamic based on time range of your photo collection, so you can locate the photo you're looking for with ease. Share Individual Photos with OneDrive​

We've also added the ability to share a photo that is backed up on OneDrive. Simply right click an image and select Share, Using OneDrive. Other fixes and improvements ​

• Based on community feedback, we've made it easier than ever to print your photos by bringing the Print button to the top command bar when viewing a single image, as well as offering 7:5 aspect ratio in the Resize tool.
• Various performance and stability updates to improve the Slideshow feature, navigation between tabs, and opening images.

To get these new features, update your Photos app to version number 2023.11110.8002.0 or higher. This update is rolling out to Windows Insiders across all channels.
