10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    warning sign

Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.

    updates guide

Updates patch security holes used by malware and malicious ads. Turn on automatic updates where possible.

If you saw a scary “update now” pop-up: close it and update only through your device settings or the official app store.

  3. Use layered protection: antivirus plus an ad blocker.

    shield guide

Antivirus helps block malware. An ad blocker reduces scam redirects, phishing pages, and malvertising.

If your browser is acting weird: remove unknown extensions, reset the browser, then run a full scan.

  4. Install apps, software, and extensions only from official sources.

    install guide

Avoid cracked software, “keygens,” and random downloads. During installs, choose Custom/Advanced and decline bundled offers you do not recognize.

If you already installed something suspicious: uninstall it, restart, and scan again.

  5. Treat links and attachments as untrusted by default.

    cursor sign

Phishing often impersonates delivery services, banks, and popular brands. If it is unexpected, do not open attachments or log in through the message.

If you entered credentials: change the password immediately and enable 2FA.

  6. Shop safely: research the store, then pay with protection.

    trojan horse

Be cautious with brand-new stores, “closing sale” stories, and prices that make no sense. Prefer credit cards or PayPal for dispute options. Avoid wire transfers, gift cards, and crypto payments.

If you already paid: contact your card issuer or PayPal quickly to dispute the transaction.

  7. Crypto rule: never pay a “fee” to withdraw or recover money.

    lock sign

Common patterns include fake profits, then “tax,” “gas,” or “verification” fees. Another is a “recovery agent” who demands upfront crypto.

If you already sent crypto: stop paying, save evidence (wallet addresses, TXIDs, chats), and report the scam to the platform used.

  8. Secure your accounts with unique passwords and 2FA (start with email).

    lock sign

Use a password manager and unique passwords for every account. Enable 2FA using an authenticator app when possible.

If you suspect an account takeover: change passwords, sign out of all devices, and review recent logins and recovery settings.

  9. Back up important files and keep one backup offline.

    backup sign

Backups protect you from ransomware and device failure. Keep at least one backup on an external drive that is not always connected.

If you suspect infection: do not connect backup drives until the system is clean.

  10. If you think you are a victim: stop losses, document evidence, and escalate fast.

    warning sign

Move quickly. Speed matters for disputes, account recovery, and limiting damage.

    • Stop payments and contact: do not send more money or respond to the scammer.
    • Call your bank or card issuer: block transactions, replace the card if needed, and start a dispute or chargeback.
    • Secure your email first: change the email password, enable 2FA, and remove unfamiliar recovery options.
    • Secure other accounts: change passwords, enable 2FA, and log out of all sessions.
    • Scan your device: remove suspicious apps or extensions, then run a full malware scan.
    • Save evidence: screenshots, emails, order pages, tracking pages, wallet addresses, TXIDs, and chat logs.
    • Report it: to the payment provider, marketplace, social platform, exchange, or wallet service involved.

These rules are intentionally simple. Most online losses happen when decisions are rushed. Slow down, verify independently, and use payment methods and account controls that give you recourse.

70 thoughts on “How to Remove S.M.A.R.T Check”

  1. I got this attack on my computer and like everyone else it simply took over the whole machine. We decided to follow your steps in removing this virus. We followed each step carefully and allowed the PC to do it’s thing “IN IT’S OWN TIME” the results was fantastic when we got to the unhide stage to see all the files and icons return was such a joy and relief. We can’t thank you enough for allowing people like ourselves the confidence to attempt such a task and to get a 100% result. You are a good man, it took a while maybe because my main harddrive is a 2tb but also the computer seems to run a lot faster as well. Thank you once again Stelian and good luck with everything you do. Richard Gardener

  2. I went through your instructions and it seemed I got rid of the virus 3 days ago. However, now it seems the ‘S.M.A.R.T Check’ virus has changed into simply the ‘Check’ virus… I’ll explain.

Everything appears the same as in your images above except that the program title doesn’t say ‘S.M.A.R.T Check’, it now says ‘Check’. But it’s not just this name difference that sets them apart. This new version will not allow me to complete the first step in this guide, changing the proxy. The first time around (3 days ago) with the ‘S.M.A.R.T Check’ I was able to restart my computer in smart mode with networking and fix the proxy issues. Now with this ‘Check’ version, it won’t allow me to do that at all. I am using my Mac desktop to write this right now, the virus is on my windows 7 laptop.

I didn’t go out and download anything to cause this so I must have a program on my computer that goes out and sources this virus from the internet or something… I don’t know, maybe that makes sense. Obviously not a techie.

I’m at a complete loss on how to fix this one…

Now i’m only wondering how i got the “infection” in the first place? :S

  4. You should have your own app or icon for my desktop- brilliant instructions! This saved a lot of data on my hard drive I was about to give up on – thanks so much!

  5. I wish you would also write a guide as to how to get rid of those Window’s Genuine Advantage notifications. I can’t do that either and since the IT guy fixed my computer last year they pop up every time I start my computer and I can’t update anything.

  6. OMG, I cannot express the depth of my gratitude to you for carefully outlining this strategy Stelian! I am the most un -tech savvy person there is and I followed your instructions to a “T” and it WORKED! Your explicit instructions, the screen shots and all the options and the thoroughness of your fix were perfect for someone who had no idea about what she’s doing. When this vicious thing took over my computer I was ready to take it to an IT guy I used last year when a similar thing happened but as luck would have it he just left for a month long vacation so I was forced to try and fix this on my own and I did it in two days in about 4 hours! You are en excellent teacher! I did have a few problems along the way, I was unable to use hitmanpro in safe mode, the bottom was cut off and I was unable to click on the next option to run it. When I tried to run it in normal mode that too was impossible because the virus blocked everything I tried to do and even attacked me with another virus in the midst of all of it, the blekko redirect virus. After that, I had to try and figure out how to get rid of that one too which seems to be gone now as well. Anyhoo, I went back into safe mode, did everything except hitmanpro, and that stabilized things to the point where I could go into normal mode and run hitmanpro but the hitmanpro had to be my last step after everything else was stabilized. I cannot thank you enough, I wish I could bake you a cake or something or buy your Starbucks for you for a month. You saved me about 150 to $200 buy doing this on my own.! I have now downloaded Kaspersky pure and I really hope that this protects me better than the free antivirus stuff I was using. Thank you again Stelian! You have been a lifesaver!

  10. Dear Stelian, I saw your guide helped a lot of people. My wife got same trouble, and I worked for 10 hours today for fix this SMART sh*t. I got the SMART Data Recovery, plus a fake page of the STATE POLICE that appears in NORMAL MODE (not from the begininng of the infection). My OS is WIN XP SP3. I cannot keep your guide to the end, because in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORK when I attempt to scan with Malware or kill rootkits with IExplorer, after the programs scanned for 5-10 minutes my laptop turns suddenly off. I’m scared because after that is impossibile to make the laptop restarted. I have to push the start button 2 or 3 times before it starts again… In Normal Mode everything is perfect… Perfect exept the virus I mean. Could you help me? TDSS appears to works not. • That’s great but doesn’t solve my problem. The Unhide program freezes. And I’ve already run the Emsisoft program. And I don’t know what it means when it says to copy the smptp files to wherever. And the desktop won’t stop being a black screen. I’ll try all this again of course, but any other tips would be great. Thanks.

  12. My roommate or one of the kids got this on my computer while I was at work… I am so glad it is fixed!! This worked very well and was easy to use!!

    • Thank you So Much! My wifes co worker was using the the office laptop and some how mysteriously the SMART Malware appeared and made it impossible for them to get access to some desktop folders. Your steps were easy to follow and really worked!

Thanks to the good guys like you and the developers of the freeware software, we can stop the bad guys from messing up systems that people need!

      Thanks again,

      Vince

  13. Thank you so so much for this. It helped me greatly. Screw these a holes who find enjoyment out of messing up peoples lives. I didn’t know if I’d be able to do it but your knowledge was presented clearly that even relative novice could complete this with in a few hrs.

  14. My wife got this virus-totally messed up the laptop. This site and the step by step instructions helped me remove the virus and alls its bugs. It takes time but its better than an IT bill of 3-400 dollars.
Thank you for all the effort you put into this blog to help people out.
