MackDEV EXPOSED: .MackDEV Files, MackDEV_README.txt, and a 72-Hour Price Hike

You open Documents the way you did yesterday. The first photo should still be 1.jpg. The snapshot should still be 2.png. The vacation shot should still be vacation.jpg. The invoice should still be invoice-2026.pdf. The script should still be notes.py. Instead every familiar name has a second ending tacked on. 1.jpg is now 1.jpg.MackDEV. 2.png is now 2.png.MackDEV. A small text file named MackDEV_README.txt is sitting in the same folder, as if it has always belonged there.

That is the trap, not a glitch.

This page is for the hour those names appear. It is not a miracle key. It is a map of the trap, so the note does not become your incident plan.

Overview

MackDEV ransomware locks the files first. Then it keeps the old name and the old type, and hangs .MackDEV on the end. Then it drops MackDEV_README.txt and talks like a recovery desk. The note is a storefront. It shouts MACKDEV RANSOMWARE v7.1 and YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED. It lists documents, images, databases, archives, and source code as if that inventory were a lab report. It tells you to send 100 XMR, which is Monero, to an address that is only the words DM ME. It tells you to confirm payment at Telegram(AllocConsole). It says the decryption price will increase after 72 hours. It says files may become permanently corrupted after 7 days. The unique system ID line is a dash. This page will not invent an email, a Telegram handle, or a wallet to finish their sentence.

If you are staring at a pile of .MackDEV files and that text note, you are in a ransom incident, not a broken disk and not a Windows pop-up. The folder is the evidence. The note is a checkout. Stay with the folder, not with the script.

The first tell is the rename. In the sample used for this page, 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.MackDEV. 2.png becomes 2.png.MackDEV. vacation.jpg becomes vacation.jpg.MackDEV. invoice-2026.pdf becomes invoice-2026.pdf.MackDEV. notes.py becomes notes.py.MackDEV. You can still read what the file used to be. You cannot open it. Windows may call the type a MACKDEV File and offer a useless “choose an app” box. An app cannot talk locked bytes back into a JPEG. There is 0% chance Photos can open 1.jpg.MackDEV because you picked a viewer.

The second tell is the note. After the files are locked, the malware drops MackDEV_README.txt into the same folders. README sounds like documentation. MackDEV is the brand. Put them together and the first English you can still read after the photos break is a sales flyer. The flyer is meant to be opened. It is not meant to be trusted.

The body of that sample is long on purpose, then unfinished on purpose. A boxed header shouts MACKDEV RANSOMWARE v7.1 and YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED. Then ALL YOUR IMPORTANT FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED! Then a type list: Documents (PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX). Images (JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF, PSD, AI). Databases (SQL, MDB, ACCDB, DBF). Archives (ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR). Source code (CPP, CS, JAVA, PY, JS, PHP). And many others. Then HOW TO RECOVER YOUR FILES. Step 1 is send 100 XMR (Monero) to this address: DM ME. Step 2 is contact us to confirm payment: Telegram(AllocConsole). Step 3 is you will receive a unique decryption key, decryption software, and instructions for recovery. Then TIME IS LIMITED. Decryption price will increase after 72 hours. Files may become permanently corrupted after 7 days. Then DO NOT ATTEMPT: decrypt files yourself, rename encrypted files (*.MackDEV), use data recovery software, reinstall Windows, or modify system files. Then Your unique system ID: -. Encrypted files: 1431. Encryption date: 2026-02-11 08:28:36. Then a last line that only wants money, not your personal data. That is the whole costume.

There is no inbox under that costume. There is no @ handle you can search. There is no Monero string. There is no $ sticker next to the 100 XMR ask. This page will not invent them. A missing wallet is not a coupon. A leftover Windows function name in the Telegram line is not a help desk. The flyer already named the only steps it wants: send coin to a phrase, then write a placeholder that looks like debug text. Following those steps is the product.

The locker still looks unfinished. v7.1 is printed like a product version. The payment address is two words. The contact line is Telegram(AllocConsole), which is a Windows console call sitting where a real chat name would go. The unique system ID is a dash. Encrypted files and a date are filled in, as if a counter worked and a clock worked, and then the shop ran out of doors. That unfinished look is not a kindness. It is still a locker. It is still asking for 100 XMR. It is still hanging .MackDEV on 1.jpg and 2.png.

That is the whole pitch. A locked folder of .MackDEV names. A MackDEV_README.txt file that talks like a recovery brief. A boxed v7.1 shout. A type list. A 100 XMR ask with DM ME where a wallet should be. A Telegram line that is not a person. A 72-hour price hike. A 7-day “permanently corrupted” threat. A dash for an ID. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no reason to hunt a chat today because a text file told you to. This locker is also not Mack Trucks and not a “Mack Dev” software shop that happens to share letters. Name the locker. Leave the companies out of it.

The .MackDEV name is the first warning

Most lockers pick an extension so you notice the change in seconds. This one uses .MackDEV. The extra cruelty is how readable the listing stays. You do not have to decode anything. You can still see 1.jpg inside 1.jpg.MackDEV. You can still see 2.png inside 2.png.MackDEV. You can still see the invoice year. You can still see the word vacation. The familiar words are still in the folder. The files are not familiar anymore.

Do not treat that readable name as a fix. Do not strip .MackDEV off the end and expect Photos or Excel to open the file. Do not run a bulk “extension fixer” you found in an ad. The name is a label. The lock is in the content. Editing the label can make a later trusted tool have a harder time matching the file to what it was. Leave the locked copies as they are until you have a clean machine and a plan that does not start in a criminal chat they never even printed.

The extra ending also does advertising. Anyone who sees 1.jpg.MackDEV next to MackDEV_README.txt can pretend they already have your case. A later fake helper will quote the extension back to you as if that were expertise. The extension is public. It is sitting in the folder. Quoting it proves nothing except that they can read a listing.

MackDEV_README.txt is a sales floor, not a help file

The ransom note is a plain text file with a name that sounds like documentation. MackDEV_README.txt wants the first click after the panic. Plenty of real software drops a README. This one uses that habit against you. It is meant to be the first English you can still read when the photos will not open.

Double-clicking it opens Notepad. That is why a panicked first click feels like opening the help page. It is not help. It is the demand, written so it looks official enough to follow. The filename is built to look like paperwork. MackDEV. README. A .txt ending Windows already trusts. Paperwork is easier to obey than a threat.

Keep the file on disk. Then close it. Do not treat it as a set of steps you should follow. Do not tidy the filename. Do not shorten it to “the readme” when you write the incident down. Copy MackDEV_README.txt the way you would copy a serial off a stolen laptop. That string is how a responder matches this locker. It is not a coupon you redeem by sending 100 XMR to a phrase.

YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED is a shout, not a lab report

The first lines of the sample are not a diagnosis. They are a headline. MACKDEV RANSOMWARE v7.1 and YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED do the same job a fake breaking-news banner does on a supplement page. They name the disaster in capital letters so the rest of the flyer feels like the only adult in the room. You are supposed to stop thinking and start obeying.

The shout is also a brand. Later search ads will quote it. Later “helpers” will paste MACKDEV RANSOMWARE v7.1 so they sound close to your folder. Anyone can copy a headline. Copying YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED does not mean they can reverse .MackDEV. It means they read the same note you did, or they read a screenshot of it.

If the shout is sitting in more than one folder, that is normal for this family. Lockers drop the same text in many places so you cannot miss it. Finding five copies is not five incidents. It is one incident with a loud flyer. Keep one clean copy as evidence. You do not need to open every copy. You do not need to compare them in a Telegram window the note never actually named.

The file-type list is a costume inventory

The note lists the kinds of files it wants you to feel. Documents. Images. Databases. Archives. Source code. It names PDF and Office files. It names JPG and PNG. It names SQL and MDB. It names ZIP and RAR. It names CPP, JAVA, and PY. That list is meant to make a home folder and a work folder feel equally doomed. It is a menu of panic, not a proof that every one of those types on your disk was touched.

Read the list as theater. If you see 1.jpg.MackDEV and 2.png.MackDEV, you already have enough to name the locker. You do not need the flyer to walk you through every extension you ever used. You do not need to “test” a .CPP file to see if the list was honest. Testing is how more files get handled while you are still reading the sales page.

A later helper will recite that same list as if they inventoried your machine. Reciting PDF, JPG, SQL, and PY is easy. Opening vacation.jpg.MackDEV again is not. If the pitch is “we know every type they hit, send $ first,” you are still in the market the ransomware created.

100 XMR is a sticker, not a key

The recovery step starts with a number. Send 100 XMR (Monero) to this address. Then the address is DM ME. That is 100% of the payment aisle they printed. There is no wallet string under it. There is no $ conversion. There is no “about $X at today’s rate” footnote. The coin name is there so the ask feels real. The missing address is there so you will go looking for a person to finish the sentence.

Do not convert 100 XMR into a $ figure in your head and decide it is “not that much if we pay today.” The number is theirs. The files are already locked. Another afternoon of panic will not change the bytes in vacation.jpg.MackDEV. Do not “test” a smaller amount to see if they answer. A test payment is still a payment. It still tells them this victim pays.

The CISA StopRansomware Guide is blunt about this kind of squeeze. Paying does not ensure the files come back, does not ensure the systems are clean, and does not ensure anyone on the other side keeps a promise. A note that starts with a locked folder and a 100 XMR sticker is not a vendor. A line that says DM ME is not a checkout you should complete.

DM ME is not a wallet

Other lockers print a long coin address so you can pay without talking. This one prints two words. DM ME. That is not an address. It is a command. It is meant to make you open a chat and ask where to send the 100 XMR. The shop wants a conversation more than it wants you to paste a string into an exchange by yourself.

This page will not invent a Monero address to put under those two words. A missing wallet is not a puzzle. If a later stranger publishes a long string and calls it the MackDEV wallet, that is their string, not the note. If your own file on disk still shows only DM ME, keep the file. Do not tidy it. Do not fill a public screenshot so it looks more complete.

That gap is where copycats work. Someone will sell a “connector.” Someone will ask you to run a command so they can “reach the operator on your behalf.” Someone will say the real address was left out by mistake. None of that is a reason to finish their sentence. The sample used for this page reprints the payment line as DM ME. Leave it that way.

Telegram(AllocConsole) is leftover costume, not a help desk

The printed contact is Telegram(AllocConsole). Copy that string exactly. Do not tidy it. Do not add an @. Do not guess a different spelling. Do not turn AllocConsole into a username you found in a search box. AllocConsole is a Windows call that opens a console window. It is sitting where a chat name would go. That is how unfinished this locker still looks. It is not a verified help desk, not a company, and not a person you can leave a review for.

Do not open Telegram because the note said to. Do not hunt a MackDEV account “just to see.” Do not send a test file to prove you are a real victim. Do not paste a folder listing into a new chat. Do not argue about 100 XMR with a stranger who claims they are AllocConsole. Those doorways belong to the people who locked the files, or to whoever is standing in that doorway today. Writing them is the product.

This page will not invent a Telegram handle to replace that leftover. If a later message says the “real” MackDEV account is a neat @name, that neat name is not in the sample. The sample printed Telegram(AllocConsole). That string is evidence. It is not a door you should walk through.

72 hours is a fuse, not a courtesy

TIME IS LIMITED is printed like a shipping policy. Decryption price will increase after 72 hours. That sentence does two jobs. It makes waiting feel expensive. It also hides the fact that 100 XMR is already a made-up sticker with no aisle behind it. A higher price on a missing wallet is still a missing wallet. The clock is the product. The hike is the hook.

Do not start a kitchen-timer because a text file said 72 hours. Do not convert 100 XMR into a $ figure and decide it is cheaper before the hike. Do not pay a deposit to “hold the original 72-hour price” for anyone who quotes the note. The flyer already named 72 hours. Leave the rest uninvented. A later message that says “pay now or the deal expires tonight” is still the same shop, or a copycat standing in the same doorway.

7 days and permanently corrupted is a destroy threat

The next line is the second fuse. Files may become permanently corrupted after 7 days. Other families use leak clocks. This one uses a corruption clock. The feeling is the same. Wait, and something worse happens. Send 100 XMR, and maybe the worse thing stays off.

Do not test the week. Do not “wait six days and decide on day seven.” Do not see what happens if you open 1.jpg.MackDEV on day eight. The note already told you the seventh day is the line they want you to fear. Whether they can actually wreck the locked bytes on a timer is not a puzzle you solve at the kitchen table. The files are already locked. Feeding that fear a payment can only make a bad hour worse.

The count is also a sales tool. A person who would never pay a crew still thinks, maybe I have a week. Seven feels like room. Permanently corrupted feels like a last chance. Last chances are how a missing wallet becomes a panic. Your job is not to beat the calendar. Your job is to stop treating the calendar as a technician.

The dash ID is unfinished, not a coupon

The note prints a unique system ID, then leaves a dash. It prints Encrypted files: 1431. It prints Encryption date: 2026-02-11 08:28:36. Those last two lines look finished. The ID line does not. A real shop that wanted you in a ticket system would print a long ID you could paste. This one printed a hyphen and moved on.

Do not invent an ID so the flyer looks complete. Do not type a guessed ID into a random page that claims to be MackDEV. Do not treat 1431 as a case number you can call. The count and the date are evidence for a report. They are not a customer number. They are not proof that 1431 files on your own disk were touched. They are numbers the sample printed.

The unfinished ID matches the unfinished contact. DM ME. Telegram(AllocConsole). A dash. v7.1 on a box. The locker still looks like someone shipped the shout before they shipped the shop. That does not make the lock kinder. It makes the copycats louder, because they will offer to “finish” the missing pieces for you.

MackDEV is a locker name, not a truck maker

MackDEV looks like a studio tag. It looks like a developer handle. It looks like something a person might type on a laptop sticker. This page is not a smear of Mack Trucks, and it is not a smear of any ordinary “Mack Dev” shop that happens to share letters. If a program you actually installed happens to use similar words, that does not make it this locker. This locker is the one that appends .MackDEV, drops MackDEV_README.txt, asks for 100 XMR, prints DM ME, and prints Telegram(AllocConsole).

Do not hunt Mack Trucks because the flyer used those letters. Do not mail a software vendor as if they ran the lock. Do not call a company switchboard and ask for MackDEV support. The brand on the note is costume. The evidence is the extra ending on 1.jpg.MackDEV and 2.png.MackDEV, plus MackDEV_README.txt.

Later ads will blur that line on purpose. They will put a clean logo next to a locked folder. They will talk as if a real firm owes you a decrypt. A real firm did not hang .MackDEV on your photos. Name the locker. Leave the companies out of the incident title.

How The Attack Works

The shop is simple once you stop reading it as a rescue. Lock the files. Brand the names with .MackDEV. Drop MackDEV_README.txt. Shout v7.1. List the file types. Point recovery at 100 XMR. Leave the address as DM ME. Leave the contact as Telegram(AllocConsole). Print a 72-hour price hike. Print a 7-day corruption threat. Forbid renaming, homemade decrypt, and a Windows reinstall. Leave the unique ID as a dash. Then wait for someone else to sell the missing wallet.

1. The lock keeps the old name so you recognize the loss

MackDEV encrypts the files it wants as leverage, then appends .MackDEV. That is why 1.jpg is still readable as 1.jpg.MackDEV, why 2.png is still readable as 2.png.MackDEV, and why invoice-2026.pdf is still readable as invoice-2026.pdf.MackDEV. The operators want you to inventory the damage in seconds. They want you to see the photo, the snapshot, the vacation shot, the invoice, and the script in one glance. A coded filename can confuse you. A readable filename makes you feel the theft.

If only one folder looks wrong, do not assume the rest of the disk is safe. Ransomware walks trees. It hits Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, and any drive letter it can reach, including a USB stick you forgot was plugged in. Do not plug in a copy “just to check.” Checking is how the extra copy gets the same .MackDEV ending.

Double-clicking a renamed file does not bring the photo back. The thumbnail may already look broken. Excel may ask for a workbook that is still sitting in the same folder, only the bytes inside are no longer a workbook. That broken open is the first proof. The second proof is the extra ending. Together they are enough. You do not need to write DM ME to confirm what you are looking at.

2. MackDEV_README.txt takes the first click

Once the names are branded, the malware needs a voice. Other families cover the glass. This one drops a text file. MackDEV_README.txt feels like the machine itself left you a note. It feels like a help file you must finish before you can do anything else. That is how a locked photo folder starts to feel like a checkout.

The note is also a hiding trick. While you are reading it, you are not calmly sorting 1.jpg.MackDEV next to 2.png.MackDEV. You are not photographing Explorer. You are not calling someone who can help. The demand is in Notepad. The evidence is in the listing. Read the note as a sales flyer. Then close it. Keep the file. The files next to it still matter more than the shout.

Notice what the note does not give you. It does not give you a company, a refund policy, or a way to prove the other side will ever send a key. It does not give you an inbox. It does not give you a wallet. It gives you a tone that says this is already decided. That tone is the product.

3. v7.1 and the box art make it look like a product

The header is drawn like a title screen. MACKDEV RANSOMWARE v7.1. A version number is meant to make the locker feel finished, numbered, and professional. It is still a text file. Shipping a v7.1 banner while the payment line says DM ME is how you can tell the costume came first. The version is branding. It is not a support contract.

Later “helpers” will quote v7.1 as if they have a patch for that build. Quoting a version from a ransom note is not a credential. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. A build number in a flyer does not become a key because someone repeated it in a sales chat.

4. 100 XMR plus DM ME is a checkout with no aisle

HOW TO RECOVER YOUR FILES is three steps that do not add up. Send 100 XMR to this address. The address is DM ME. Contact us to confirm payment. The contact is Telegram(AllocConsole). You will receive a unique decryption key, decryption software, and instructions. That last promise is the whole warranty. There is no sample decrypt. There is no $ total. There is no way to prove a key will arrive.

You are supposed to feel that the only missing piece is a person. Find the person, send the coin, get the tool. That is a sales paragraph, not a recovery procedure. The person is not printed. The aisle is not printed. The 100 XMR sticker is printed so the rest of the night feels like shopping.

Do not hunt a Monero address because the flyer forgot one. Do not ask a forum to “look up the MackDEV wallet.” Do not let a later message invent a $ figure and call it the original price in dollars. The published note printed 100 XMR and DM ME. Leave the rest uninvented.

5. Telegram(AllocConsole) is the unfinished door they want you to finish

The recovery step is not a key sitting on the desk. It is a chat app they name, then a leftover Windows call where a handle should be. That is the whole door. It looks like support because support uses chat. Criminal shops use chat too, because a thread is where a missing wallet becomes a negotiation and a locked photo becomes a sample they asked you to attach.

Do not install a chat app because MackDEV_README.txt said to. Do not hunt AllocConsole “just to see.” Do not send a screenshot of Explorer to prove the lock. They already chose the extension. They already chose the note filename. A photo of 1.jpg.MackDEV sitting next to 2.png.MackDEV does not make you a verified customer. It makes you a person still following the flyer.

If someone later says they will “talk to MackDEV for you” through a handle they found, that is a broker pitch. Brokers need you in the same funnel. You do not owe them a seat. Report the incident through official desks. Let counsel decide if contact is ever required for a specific legal reason. That decision is not yours to make from Notepad at midnight.

6. 72 hours keeps you from thinking

The 72-hour line is a fuse. Decryption price will increase after 72 hours. Other families hide the amount and print a clock. This one prints 100 XMR and then threatens to raise it. You are supposed to feel that waiting is already a mistake. You are supposed to go looking for a chat before you have even asked where the coin would go.

Do not add a $ sticker the flyer never printed. Do not start a personal countdown because a later message said “pay $ now to keep the original deal.” The published note printed 100 XMR and 72 hours. A hike on a missing wallet is still a sales trick. Leave the amount in XMR, unconverted. Leave the chat unopened.

7. 7 days and permanently corrupted keep you from reporting

The 7-day line is the second fuse. Files may become permanently corrupted after 7 days. That word permanently is doing a lot of work. It makes an official report feel slow. It makes counsel feel slow. It makes breakfast feel slow. It is still a sentence in a text file. It is not a court date. It is not a confirmed wipe.

Do not try to beat the 7-day clock by sending a first message “just to stop the corruption.” That first message is the product. It tells them a victim is live. It tells them a victim reads English. It tells them a victim is afraid of the TIME IS LIMITED block. You can still tell the people whose files lived on the machine. You can still tell counsel. You can still tell an official desk. The people who locked the files do not get a seat in that call.

8. The do-not list tries to cut you off

The DO NOT ATTEMPT block is blunt. Do not decrypt files yourself. Do not rename encrypted files (*.MackDEV). Do not use data recovery software. Do not reinstall Windows. Do not modify system files. Some of that is ordinary locker copy. Leaving the locked names alone is still good advice, for a different reason than they want. Renaming is not a repair. Miracle decryptors from ads are often a second scam.

Calling that out does not mean you should obey the rest of the flyer. It does not mean you should skip an official report. It does not mean you should skip counsel. It does not mean you should sit still for 7 days because they said the files will be permanently corrupted. The people who locked the files do not get a vote on who you tell, and they do not get a vote on how you rebuild a machine after the evidence is copied off.

Read the list as theater that wants you lonely. A person who is afraid to tell anyone is a person who will go looking for Telegram(AllocConsole). The warning also makes the flyer feel official, like a sealed case file. It is still a text file in Documents. It is still sitting next to 1.jpg.MackDEV and 2.png.MackDEV.

9. Third parties will sell a MackDEV conversation

After a ransomware incident, search results fill up with companies that say they can decrypt MackDEV or “all .MackDEV files.” Some of those shops are ordinary overpriced consultants. Plenty are a second scam. They will quote MackDEV_README.txt so they sound close to the case. They will mention 100 XMR. They will mention the 72-hour hike. They will mention the 7-day corruption line. They will mention DM ME and Telegram(AllocConsole) as if they already called the original crew. They will ask for a sample file, a remote-access session, or a deposit.

A demo that “unlocks one file” is not proof they can unlock the vacation photo. Anyone can open one junk file they control. Anyone can send you a Monero string that makes an exchange window appear. An exchange window is not Photos opening vacation.jpg again. If a later message skips the original DM ME line and asks for coin over ordinary mail, that is still the same market, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. Do not answer. Do not help them set a wallet the public copy left off on purpose.

A real public decryptor, when one exists, shows up on an official project page that already existed before your incident. It does not need a 100 XMR send. It does not need a Telegram hunt. If the pitch is “we can decrypt, pay us first,” you are still in the market the ransomware created. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. Until a trusted project publishes one, treat any site that says “we already have the MackDEV key” as a second sales pitch.

10. Payment and chasing that chat close nothing

Paying a stranger for a private key is not a guarantee. The people who send the note can take the 100 XMR and disappear. They can send a string that only makes a decryptor show an error. They can come back later and lock the same machine again. A chat thread makes that outcome easier, not harder. You cannot leave a review on Telegram(AllocConsole).

Chasing that leftover contact is the free version of the same dead end. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. Starting a thread does not rebuild a JPEG. It only keeps you in their story while the rest of the disk still needs a real plan.

If this is a company machine, tell counsel and your incident lead. If this is a home PC, tell the people whose files lived on it. Change passwords from a clean device. Watch bank and email alerts. Opening a chat they never named is not useful work. Filling DM ME with a guessed wallet is not useful work. It is the checkout, even when the flyer never printed an inbox and never printed a coin address.

What To Do If Your Files End in .MackDEV

Do not pay 100 XMR. Do not invent an email, a Telegram handle, or a wallet to finish MackDEV_README.txt. Do not treat DM ME as an address. Do not treat Telegram(AllocConsole) as a person. Do not hunt a MackDEV account “just to see.” Do not send a test file. Do not send proof of payment. If you already opened a chat before you found this page, stop there. Do not pay a deposit to “hold the original 72-hour price” for anyone who quotes the note. This locker is not Mack Trucks and not a “Mack Dev” company. Name the locker. Leave the firms out of it.

RKill is a program that was developed at BleepingComputer.com that attempts to terminate known malware processes so that your normal security software can then run and clean your computer of infections. When RKill runs it will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies that stop us from using certain tools.

  1. Download Rkill.

    You can download RKill to your computer from the below link. When at the download page, click on the Download Now button labeled iExplore.exe. We are downloading a renamed version of Rkill (iExplore.exe) because some malware will not allow processes to run unless they have a certain filename.

  2. Run RKill.

    After downloading, double-click the iExplore.exe icon to kill malicious processes. In most cases, downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder.
    The program may take some time to search for and end various malware programs.

STEP 2: Use Malwarebytes to remove Ransomware and Unwanted Programs

In this second step, we will install Malwarebytes to scan and remove any infections, adware, or potentially unwanted programs that may be present on your computer.

    When the download finishes, open your Downloads folder and double-click the MBSetup file. If Windows shows a User Account Control pop-up, click “Yes” to allow the installation.

  5. Start the Scan

    Click the blue Scan button. Malwarebytes will automatically update its virus database and start checking your computer for malware.

    The scan checks your entire system for browser hijackers and other malicious programs, so it can take several minutes. Feel free to do something else — just check back occasionally to see the progress.

  7. Quarantine the Detected Threats

    When the scan is done, you’ll see a list of everything Malwarebytes found — malware, adware, and potentially unwanted programs. Click the “Quarantine” button to remove all of them at once.

  2. Run the Installer

    When the download finishes, open your Downloads folder and double-click “esetonlinescanner.exe“.

STEP 6: Restore the files encrypted by ransomware

Unfortunately, in most cases, it’s not possible to recover the files encrypted by this ransomware virus because the private key which is needed to unlock the encrypted files is only available through the attackers. Option 3: Try to restore your files with ShadowExplorer

This ransomware will attempt to delete all shadow copies when you first start any executable on your computer after becoming infected. Thankfully, the infection is not always able to remove the shadow copies, so you should continue to try restoring your files using this method.

  2. Install ShadowExplorer.

    Double-click on the ShadowExplorer-x.x-setup file to start the installation process, then follow the on-screen promts to install this program.

  3. Select snapshot date.

    Open ShadowExplorer and then from the top bar select the drive where the files that you want to save are located, then select from the snapshot available one previous to this infection.

  4. Export the files that you want to recover.

    Once you have found a copy of the original file or folder, right-click on it and the select “Export”. A window will prompt you where you want to save the file or folder.

Keep every .MackDEV name exactly as it is. Keep at least one locked sample, including a documented name such as 1.jpg.MackDEV or 2.png.MackDEV. Do not bulk-rename 1.jpg.MackDEV back to 1.jpg, or 2.png.MackDEV back to 2.png, or vacation.jpg.MackDEV back to a normal JPEG, or invoice-2026.pdf.MackDEV back to a normal PDF, or notes.py.MackDEV back to a normal script. Stripping the extra ending is not a repair. It can make a later trusted tool worse, not better. The original name is already sitting in front of .MackDEV. You do not need to edit it to know what you lost.

Keep MackDEV_README.txt with the locked files. Do not “clean up” every copy of the note. Do not fill in a wallet so the flyer looks complete. Do not invent an inbox. Do not invent a Telegram handle. The DM ME line, the Telegram(AllocConsole) line, and the dash on the unique system ID are part of how you prove this was this strain and not a different locker that only sounds similar. Keep the contact marks as identifiers: the MACKDEV RANSOMWARE v7.1 shout, the 100 XMR ask, the 72-hour price hike, the 7-day permanently corrupted line, Encrypted files: 1431, and Encryption date: 2026-02-11 08:28:36. Those artifacts are evidence. They are not instructions you should carry out.

Do not pay 100 XMR. Do not write a chat they never named. Do not ask a friend to write them “just to see.” There is no real inbox on that flyer. A printed 100 XMR is still a ransom. A calm DM ME is still the people who locked the files, or whoever wants you to finish their sentence. If a later message quotes MackDEV_README.txt and offers “the real wallet,” that is still the same shop. If a later message skips the original DM ME line and asks for coin over a different address, that is still the same shop, or a copycat standing in the same doorway.

If someone claims they can already decrypt MackDEV files for a fee because they can recite 100 XMR, 72 hours, and Telegram(AllocConsole), they are selling a report, not a key. If they mention MackDEV_README.txt as proof they “already called the crew,” they read the same note you did. Do not answer. Do not complete their checkout. Do not help them fix the flyer. This is not Mack Trucks and not a vendor ticket. It is a locker named MackDEV.

If Windows still offers to pick an app for the .MackDEV type, decline it. There is no player for that ending.

The Bottom Line

MackDEV ransomware is a locker with a readable filename, a README that shouts ENCRYPT, and a checkout that still looks unfinished. It keeps the old name and appends .MackDEV. 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.MackDEV. 2.png becomes 2.png.MackDEV. The note is MackDEV_README.txt. It shouts MACKDEV RANSOMWARE v7.1, lists the file types, asks for 100 XMR, prints DM ME where a wallet should be, prints Telegram(AllocConsole) where a chat name should be, says the price increases after 72 hours, and says files may become permanently corrupted after 7 days. The unique system ID is a dash. There is no inbox. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. This is not Mack Trucks and not a “Mack Dev” company. Name the locker.

Do not pay 100 XMR. Do not invent an email, a Telegram handle, or a wallet. Do not rename the pile in bulk. Keep MackDEV_README.txt and a .MackDEV sample. If you take one sentence with you, take this. A folder of names ending in .MackDEV, plus MackDEV_README.txt with a 100 XMR ask, a 72-hour price hike, DM ME, and Telegram(AllocConsole), is ransomware on the first sighting. Treat it that way before anyone offers to finish the flyer the locker left empty.

10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

    If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.

    If you saw a scary “update now” pop-up: close it and update only through your device settings or the official app store.

  3. Use layered protection: antivirus plus an ad blocker.

    If your browser is acting weird: remove unknown extensions, reset the browser, then run a full scan.

  4. Install apps, software, and extensions only from official sources.

    If you already installed something suspicious: uninstall it, restart, and scan again.

  5. Treat links and attachments as untrusted by default.

  7. Crypto rule: never pay a “fee” to withdraw or recover money.

    Common patterns include fake profits, then “tax,” “gas,” or “verification” fees. Another is a “recovery agent” who demands upfront crypto.

    If you already sent crypto: stop paying, save evidence (wallet addresses, TXIDs, chats), and report the scam to the platform used.

  8. Secure your accounts with unique passwords and 2FA (start with email).

    If you suspect an account takeover: change passwords, sign out of all devices, and review recent logins and recovery settings.

  9. Back up important files and keep one backup offline.

    • Stop payments and contact: do not send more money or respond to the scammer.
    • Call your bank or card issuer: block transactions, replace the card if needed, and start a dispute or chargeback.

    • Secure other accounts: change passwords, enable 2FA, and log out of all sessions.
    • Scan your device: remove suspicious apps or extensions, then run a full malware scan.
    • Save evidence: screenshots, emails, order pages, tracking pages, wallet addresses, TXIDs, and chat logs.
    • Report it: to the payment provider, marketplace, social platform, exchange, or wallet service involved.

These rules are intentionally simple. Most online losses happen when decisions are rushed. Slow down, verify independently, and use payment methods and account controls that give you recourse.
