Instead every familiar name has a second ending tacked on. 1.jpg is now 1.jpg.ZETARINKXxpV1yCM. 2.png is now 2.png.ZETARINKXxpV1yCM. A small text file named ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt is sitting in the same folder, as if it has always belonged there.

That is the trap, not a glitch.

ZETARINK ransomware locks the files first. Then it keeps the old name and the old type, and hangs .ZETARINK plus a random tail on the end. In the sample used for this page that tail is XxpV1yCM, so the extra ending reads .ZETARINKXxpV1yCM. Then it drops a note named ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt and talks like a recovery desk. Then it changes the desktop wallpaper so the same shout follows you even if you close the folder. The note is a storefront. It shouts ENCRYPTED BY ZETARINK 1.22. It claims all your documents, photos, databases, and other IMP0RTANT files have been encrypted. It claims the files are not damaged, only modified, and that the change is reversible. It says the only 1 way back is a private key and a decryption program. It says any third-party restore will be fatal. Then it tells you to install Tor Browser, connect to a personal link, and enter a personal code. Public copies of that note leave the personal link blank. The personal ID line is blank too. This page will not invent an onion to finish their sentence.

If you are staring at a pile of .ZETARINK files and that text note, you are in a ransom incident, not a broken disk and not a Windows pop-up. The folder is the evidence. The note is a checkout. Stay with the folder, not with the script.

The first tell is the rename. You can still read what the file used to be. You cannot open it. Windows may call the type a ZETARINK File and offer a useless “choose an app” box. An app cannot talk locked bytes back into a JPEG. The second tell is the note. After the files are locked, the malware drops a file whose name follows ZETARINK[random]-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt. In this sample that file is ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt. HOW-TO sounds like a guide. DECRYPT sounds like a fix. Put them together and the first English you can still read after the photos break is a sales flyer. The flyer is meant to be opened. It is not meant to be trusted.

The body of that sample is a short costume. It opens =====ENCRYPTED BY ZETARINK 1.22=====. Then ALL YOUR DOCUMENTS, PHOTOS, DATABASES AND OTHER IMP0RTANT FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED. Then a calm paragraph that says your files are NOT damaged, only modified, and that the modification is reversible. Then the only 1 way: receive the private key and decryption program. Then a fatal warning about third-party software. Then five steps: visit the Tor Project site, download Tor Browser, connect to your personal link, enter your personal code, follow instructions. The personal link is printed as a dash. The personal ID is printed as a dash. That is 100% of the contact on the text file.

The ask does not live in the text file. It lives on a page they brand Zetarink Recovery Portal. That portal tells you the files were encrypted by Zetarink, that you must pay the ransom, and that the payment is 0.00015 BTC to bc1q4vsrn6cwpfxz3y5d4gsp9ksrvl3qrw2fj3ytpm. After you send coin, it asks you to enter a Bitcoin address so they can “verify” the transaction. Then it promises a recovery key and a decryptor download once an administrator confirms payment. This page reprints that wallet because it is already printed. This page will not invent the onion the note left blank. This page will not invent a Session handle, an email inbox, or an extra $ figure on top of the 0.00015 BTC they already named.

That printed ask is unusually small. A number that small can look like leftover copy from a test build. Treat it as a printed ransom anyway. A tiny sticker is still a checkout. Do not send 0.00015 BTC “just to see if the portal answers.” A test payment is still a payment. It still tells them this victim pays.

That is the whole pitch. A locked folder of .ZETARINK names with a random tail. A ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt file that talks like a recovery brief. A wallpaper that repeats the shout. A blank personal link. A blank personal ID. A portal named Zetarink Recovery Portal. A 0.00015 BTC ask. A Bitcoin wallet printed in full. No leak clock. No Session. No email. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no reason to open a blank Tor portal today because a text file told you to.

The .ZETARINK name is the first warning

Most lockers pick an extension so you notice the change in seconds. This one uses .ZETARINK plus a random string, so two machines can show two different tails. Do not treat that readable name as a fix. Do not strip .ZETARINKXxpV1yCM off the end and expect Photos or Excel to open the file. Do not run a bulk “extension fixer” you found in an ad. The name is a label. The lock is in the content. Editing the label can make a later trusted tool have a harder time matching the file to what it was. Keep the file on disk. Then close it. Do not treat it as a set of steps you should follow. Do not tidy the filename. Do not shorten it to “the how-to” when you write the incident down. That gap is where copycats work. Someone will publish a long onion and call it the ZETARINK portal. Someone will sell a “connector” that is just more malware. The printed wallet is evidence, not a checkout

ZETARINK also changes the desktop wallpaper. The glass repeats the brand. ENCRYPTED BY ZETARINK 1.22. ALL YOUR DOCUMENTS, PHOTOS, DATABASES AND OTHER IMPORTANT FILES HAVE BEEN ENCRYPTED. Then a last instruction: find ZETARINK[random]-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt and follow instructions. In the sample used for this page that file is ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt.

That wallpaper is not a second incident. It is the same flyer painted on the desktop so you cannot look away. It is meant to make closing Explorer feel useless. It is meant to make the note feel like the only remaining document on the machine. Photograph the wallpaper from a phone if you can do it without opening Tor. Then leave it. You do not need to argue with a background image. The evidence is still the .ZETARINKXxpV1yCM names and ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt.

Notice what the wallpaper does not give you. It does not give you a company, a refund policy, or a $ price. It does not give you an onion. It does not give you the 0.00015 BTC line. Paint the wallpaper with the same shout. Claim the files are only modified. Claim a private key is the only 1 way. Forbid third-party tools. Point recovery at Tor. Leave the personal link blank. Leave the personal ID blank. Put the real checkout on a portal named Zetarink Recovery Portal. Print 0.00015 BTC. Print bc1q4vsrn6cwpfxz3y5d4gsp9ksrvl3qrw2fj3ytpm. Ask for a Bitcoin address after payment. Print no leak clock. Print no Session. Print no email. Then wait for someone else to sell the missing onion.

1. The lock keeps the old name so you recognize the loss

ZETARINK encrypts the files it wants as leverage, then appends .ZETARINK plus a random string. Stripping the extra ending is not a repair. It can make a later trusted tool worse, not better. The original name is already sitting in front of .ZETARINKXxpV1yCM. You do not need to edit it to know what you lost.

Keep ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt with the locked files. Do not “clean up” every copy of the note. Do not fill in an onion so the flyer looks complete. Do not invent a personal code. The blank personal link, or the string on your disk, is part of how you prove this was this strain and not a different locker that only sounds similar. Keep the contact marks as identifiers: the ZETARINK 1.22 shout, the IMP0RTANT line, the blank personal link, the blank personal ID, the Zetarink Recovery Portal name, the 0.00015 BTC ask, and bc1q4vsrn6cwpfxz3y5d4gsp9ksrvl3qrw2fj3ytpm. Those artifacts are evidence. They are not instructions you should carry out.

Do not open a blank Tor portal for this strain. Do not ask a friend to write them “just to see.” A blank personal link is still the people who locked the files, or whoever is standing in that doorway today. If a later message quotes ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt and offers “the real onion,” that is still the same shop. If a later message skips the original blank portal and asks for 0.00015 BTC over a different address, that is still the same shop, or a copycat standing in the same doorway.

Do not send 0.00015 BTC to that wallet. Do not pay. A tiny printed ask is still a ransom. A calm portal is still the people who locked the files. If someone claims they can already decrypt ZETARINK files for a fee because they can recite 0.00015 BTC and bc1q4vsrn6cwpfxz3y5d4gsp9ksrvl3qrw2fj3ytpm, they are selling a report, not a key. If they mention ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt as proof they “already called the crew,” they read the same note you did. Do not answer. Do not complete their checkout. Do not help them fix the flyer.

It claims the files are only modified, points you at Tor Browser, leaves the personal link blank, leaves the personal ID blank, and sells a Zetarink Recovery Portal that asks for 0.00015 BTC to bc1q4vsrn6cwpfxz3y5d4gsp9ksrvl3qrw2fj3ytpm. It prints no leak clock, no Session handle, and no email. The printed ask is unusually small. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain.

Do not pay. Do not send 0.00015 BTC to that wallet. Do not open a blank Tor portal. Do not invent an onion. Do not rename the pile in bulk. Keep ZETARINKXxpV1yCM-HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt and a .ZETARINK sample. If you take one sentence with you, take this. A folder of names ending in .ZETARINK plus a random tail, plus a HOW-TO-DECRYPT note with a blank personal link and a 0.00015 BTC wallet, is ransomware on the first sighting. Treat it that way before anyone offers to fill the portal the flyer left empty.

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.
