LQTOREQ EXPOSED: .lqtoreq Files, README_LQTOREG.txt, and an Empty Decrypt Box

You open Documents the way you did yesterday. The vacation photo should still be vacation.jpg. The invoice should still be invoice-2026.pdf. The tax sheet should still be taxes.xlsx. Instead every familiar name has a second ending tacked on. 1.jpg is now 1.jpg.lqtoreq. A small text file called README_LQTOREG.txt is sitting in the same folder, as if it has always belonged there.

A window you did not open sits on top of the listing. The title is LQTOREQ RECOVERY PORTAL. It says your files have been encrypted. It wants a decryption code. The field is blank. Next to the blank sits a DECRYPT button.

That is the trap, not a glitch.

Overview

LQTOREQ ransomware locks the files first. Then it keeps the old name and the old extension, and hangs .lqtoreq on the end. Then it drops a note. Then it paints a recovery portal with an empty code box. The costume is small on purpose. There is no printed wallet. There is no printed mail address. There is no onion string. There is no Session ID. The flyer tells you the only way back is to contact the operator through a C2 server, then it never gives you a server to contact.

The first tell is the rename. 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.lqtoreq. vacation.jpg becomes vacation.jpg.lqtoreq. invoice-2026.pdf becomes invoice-2026.pdf.lqtoreq. taxes.xlsx becomes taxes.xlsx.lqtoreq. family.mp4 becomes family.mp4.lqtoreq. You can still read what the file used to be. You cannot open it. Windows may call the type an LQTOREQ File and offer a useless “choose an app” box. An app cannot talk locked bytes back into a JPEG.

The second tell is the note. After the files are locked, the malware drops README_LQTOREG.txt into the same folders. Read that filename twice. The brand on the files is LQTOREQ. The note is LQTOREG. The last letter does not match. README sounds like a help file that came with the lock. It did. It came with the lock the way a fake invoice comes with a fake shop.

The note says your files have been encrypted with AES-256. It says all encrypted files now have the .lqtoreq extension. It says the only way to recover the data is to contact the operator via the C2 server. It tells you not to attempt to decrypt files yourself. AES-256 is attacker copy in the lure. It is not a lab result printed here.

The third tell is the pop-up. The same pitch appears in a window so you cannot miss the flyer even if you never open the text file. The window is branded LQTOREQ RECOVERY PORTAL. It repeats that your files have been encrypted. It tells you to enter the decryption code below. The Decryption Code field is empty. The control under it is DECRYPT.

That is the whole costume. A locked folder of .lqtoreq names. A README whose brand does not match the extension. A recovery portal with a blank code box. A C2 instruction with no C2 address. A public write-up on this strain says there is no real way to contact the operators, which means you cannot decrypt that way. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no reason to type guesses into that empty field. There is no reason to hunt the internet for a C2 URL the note never printed.

The .lqtoreq name is the first warning

Most lockers pick an extension so you notice the change in seconds. LQTOREQ uses .lqtoreq. The extra cruelty is how readable the listing stays. You do not have to decode anything. You can still see 1.jpg inside 1.jpg.lqtoreq. You can still see the invoice year. You can still see the word taxes. The familiar words are still in the folder. The files are not familiar anymore.

Do not treat that readable name as a fix. Do not strip .lqtoreq off the end and expect Photos or Excel to open the file. Do not run a bulk “extension fixer” you found in an ad. The name is a label. The lock is in the content. Editing the label can make a later trusted tool have a harder time matching the file to what it was. Leave the locked copies as they are until you have a clean machine and a plan that does not start inside that recovery portal.

The extra ending also does advertising. Anyone who sees vacation.jpg.lqtoreq next to README_LQTOREG.txt can pretend they already have your case. A later fake helper will quote the extension back to you as if that were expertise. The extension is public. It is sitting in the folder. Quoting it proves nothing except that they can read a listing.

README_LQTOREG.txt is a sales floor, not a help file

The ransom note is a plain text file with a name that sounds like documentation. README_LQTOREG.txt wants the first click after the panic. Plenty of real software drops a README. This one uses that habit against you. It is meant to be the first English you can still read when the photos will not open.

The file tells you the data is encrypted. Then it names AES-256 as if a cipher label were a receipt. Then it tells you the way back is contact. Then it names a C2 server as the place to make that contact. Then it warns you not to decrypt the files yourself. That order matters. Scare. Algorithm. Door. Ban on self-help. There is no price on the page. There is no inbox. There is no chat ID. The missing checkout is part of the pressure, not a kindness.

Keep the file on disk. Then close it. Do not treat it as a set of steps you should follow. A README that cannot even keep its own brand spelling straight is not a recovery desk. It is a flyer dropped after a break-in.

LQTOREG is not a mismatch you should ignore

The locked files end in .lqtoreq. The note is README_LQTOREG.txt. LQTOREQ and LQTOREG are not the same word. The last letter flips from Q to G. That is an identifying mark of this strain, not a reason to hunt a second family. If a later “helper” insists the note must be named README_LQTOREQ.txt, they have not looked at your folder. If a later “decryptor” asks you to rename the note so the brands match, they are editing evidence, not repairing a photo.

The split also does a small social trick. A technical looking filename feels like a product. README plus an internal code feels like a build you were never meant to read, which is exactly how a scare wants to feel. You are supposed to think a real operation left a real ticket. What they left is a text file whose brand does not even agree with the extension it is selling.

AES-256 is a costume, not a receipt

The note claims the files were encrypted with AES-256. That string is meant to shut down argument. It sounds like a standard. It sounds like a lab. It sounds like something you cannot argue with at the kitchen table. It is still attacker copy. Naming a cipher is not the same as handing you a proof. It is also not a reason to start guessing keys into a pop-up.

People hear AES-256 and go looking for a matching “AES-256 decryptor” in ads. That search is the next trap. A tool that promises to reverse AES-256 because a ransom note printed the letters is selling the same fear in a different window. Leave the locked files alone. Do not feed them to a mystery app that asked for admin rights because a text file named a cipher.

The Recovery Portal is the same bill, only louder

After the files are locked, a window covers enough of the desktop that you cannot miss the flyer. The title is LQTOREQ RECOVERY PORTAL. Recovery. Portal. Those two words are the product. A portal is a door. Recovery is the thing you want. Put them together and a crime scene starts to look like a support site that loaded by itself.

The body is short. Your files have been encrypted. Enter the decryption code below. Then a Decryption Code field. Then DECRYPT. There is no paragraph about a wallet. There is no timer printed in the facts on this strain. There is no attempts-remaining counter. The quiet is the point. A loud locker shouts a price. This one leaves a blank and waits for you to fill the silence.

People waste the first hour on that window. They screenshot it. They search every word on it. They click DECRYPT with nothing in the box, just to see. They type the filename README_LQTOREG.txt into the field. They type .lqtoreq. They type AES-256. None of those strings is a key. Closing the window is fine for your nerves. It is not a repair. The lock lives in every .lqtoreq file, not in the glass in front of you.

The empty Decryption Code field is the product

Look at the field. It is empty. That is not a glitch in the costume. An empty box is a job. It tells you a code exists. It tells you the code belongs in that rectangle. It tells you the next useful action is to obtain the missing string and press DECRYPT. The operators never printed the string. A public write-up on this strain says there is no real way to contact them. The box still sits there, waiting, like a form that forgot its own answer.

An empty field is more useful to a criminal than a printed key would be. A printed key can be tested and fail in public. A blank can be filled later by anyone. A stranger in a comment thread can say they have the code. A YouTube description can say the code is in a file you must download. A phone caller can say they will read the code to you after you install a remote tool. The portal trained you to want a short string. The next scammer only has to supply one.

Do not treat the empty box as a lock that will open if you find the right phrase. Do not paste a “universal LQTOREQ code” from a forum. Do not pay a stranger to dictate digits into that field. The box is not holding a secret on your behalf. It is holding a slot for the next lie.

Contact via the C2 server is a door with no handle

The note says the only way to recover the data is to contact the operator via the C2 server. Then it stops. No host. No port. No onion. No URL. No handle. C2 is a phrase from malware write-ups. Dropping it into a README makes the flyer sound like an internal tool. It also sends a scared person into a search bar looking for “LQTOREQ C2 server.” That search is how copycats find you.

Do not invent a C2 address because the sentence feels unfinished. Do not follow the first hostname a search engine puts under the brand. Do not open a random IP because a comment said that is the operator panel. The note did not give you a door. A public write-up on this strain says there is no real way to contact the operators. Take that as the working fact. The recovery path they advertised is not a path you can walk.

That missing door is why the empty decrypt box is so mean. The pop-up asks for a code. The note says the code comes from a C2 conversation. The conversation has no address. You are left holding a form and a promise. The people who wrote both already know you cannot complete the pair. The point is not to help you finish. The point is to keep you in their story instead of a real incident desk.

How The Ransomware Works

The shop is simple once you stop reading it as a rescue. Lock the files. Brand the names with .lqtoreq. Drop a README whose last letter does not match. Paint a recovery portal. Leave the decryption code blank. Point the scared person at a C2 server that is never named. Warn them not to decrypt themselves. Then wait for someone else to sell the missing string.

1. The lock keeps the old name so you recognize the loss

LQTOREQ encrypts the files it wants as leverage, then appends .lqtoreq. That is why 1.jpg is still readable as 1.jpg.lqtoreq. The operators want you to inventory the damage in seconds. They want you to see the vacation photo, the invoice, the tax sheet, and the family video in one glance. A coded filename can confuse you. A readable filename makes you feel the theft.

If only one folder looks wrong, do not assume the rest of the disk is safe. Ransomware walks trees. It hits Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, and any drive letter it can reach, including a USB stick you forgot was plugged in. Unplug extra disks. Do not plug in the backup drive “just to check.” Checking is how the backup gets the same .lqtoreq ending.

Double-clicking a renamed file does not bring the photo back. The thumbnail may already look broken. Excel may ask for a workbook that is still sitting in the same folder, only the bytes inside are no longer a workbook. That broken open is the first proof. The second proof is the extra ending. Together they are enough. You do not need the portal to confirm what you are looking at.

2. The README turns a break-in into a ticket

Once the names are branded, the malware needs a voice. README_LQTOREG.txt is that voice. It sits in the same folders as the locked files so the first sort puts help next to harm. On many machines a text file sorts near the top, especially with a name in capitals. You open it because it looks like the only thing that still speaks English.

The body is short enough to finish before a relative walks into the room. Files encrypted with AES-256. New extension on everything. Contact the operator via the C2 server. Do not decrypt yourself. Four beats. Each one closes a door. The cipher name closes “maybe it is a simple rename.” The extension line closes “maybe Windows can still open it.” The C2 line closes “maybe there is a local tool.” The last line closes “maybe I can fix this myself tonight.”

Notice what the note does not give you. It does not give you a company, a refund policy, or a way to prove the other side will ever send a code. It does not give you a wallet. It does not give you a mail address. It does not give you a chat ID. It gives you a tone that says this is already decided. That tone is the product. Read the file as a sales flyer. Then close it. Keep it on disk.

3. The pop-up puts a checkout on the glass

A text file can be ignored if you are busy trying to open the photo. A window cannot. LQTOREQ RECOVERY PORTAL is the same flyer in a costume that looks like software. The title bar uses the family name with a Q. The note on disk uses a G. Even the two storefronts cannot agree on the last letter. That disagreement is a warning, not a puzzle you solve by typing both spellings into the box.

The window does three jobs at once. It repeats the scare so you do not have to open the README. It offers a field, which feels like a next step. It offers a button, which feels like a finish. People in a hurry treat buttons as progress. Pressing DECRYPT with an empty field is not progress. It is the costume working.

Do not keep the portal open “so you do not lose the code box.” The box has nothing in it. Do not screenshot the window and send it to a stranger who offered to read the code from the image. The image will show a blank. The stranger already knows that. They are selling a fill-in, not a reading.

4. The empty box trains you to wait for a code

The Decryption Code field is the most important control on the portal, and it is empty on purpose. An empty required field is how a form tells you that you are not done. You sit with the feeling of being one string away from the vacation photo. That feeling is more valuable to a criminal shop than a printed price would be. A printed price can be argued with. A missing code cannot. You cannot haggle with a blank.

Watch what the empty box does to the next hour. You search “LQTOREQ decryption code.” You search “LQTOREQ RECOVERY PORTAL.” You search the note filename. You open comment threads. You watch a video that promises the code in the description. Each of those places can plant a string. The portal already taught your hands where to paste it. That is the whole funnel. Scare, blank, paste.

If you already typed something into that field before you stopped, do not keep going. Close the window. Do not try a second guess. Do not try a third. A code box with no operator behind it will not suddenly become a decryptor because you were persistent. Persistence here is how a second scam times its pitch.

5. The C2 line sends you hunting for a door that is not there

C2 means command and control. In real malware, that is the channel an operator uses to talk to a compromised machine. In this note, it is a sentence with no address. “Contact the operator via the C2 server” sounds like a procedure. It is a dead end written as a procedure. You are supposed to feel that a professional channel exists, then feel that you are not on it yet.

That gap is where copycats work. Someone will publish a hostname and call it the LQTOREQ panel. Someone will sell a “C2 connector” that is just more malware. Someone will ask you to run a command so they can “reach the operator on your behalf.” None of that is in the note. The note never named a server. Do not invent one to finish their sentence.

A public write-up on this strain says there is no real way to contact the operators, so victims cannot decrypt that way. Hold that next to the README. The README says contact is the only way. The public write-up says contact is not available. Those two sentences cannot both be a rescue. The one that wants you hunting a hidden server is the one that locked the photos.

6. Do not decrypt yourself is a ban on every honest next step

The last line of the note tells you not to attempt to decrypt files yourself. On its face that sounds like a warning about wrecking the lock. In the flyer it does extra work. It tells you to stay inside their story. It tells you a relative who wants to copy the files off the machine is a threat. It tells you a trusted incident desk is a threat. It tells you waiting for a public tool is a threat. The criminals are not protecting your bytes. They are protecting the funnel.

There is a narrow truth hiding in that line, and it is not theirs. Do not run random decryptors from ads. Do not bulk-rename the pile. Do not feed 1.jpg.lqtoreq into a website that promises to unlock AES-256 in the browser. Those steps can damage files. The note uses that risk as a leash. You can respect the files without obeying the people who locked them. Keep the copies. Do not follow the README as a playbook.

7. Third parties will sell a code for that empty field

After a ransomware incident, search results fill up with companies that say they can decrypt LQTOREQ or “all .lqtoreq files.” Some of those shops are ordinary overpriced consultants. Plenty are a second scam. They will quote README_LQTOREG.txt so they sound close to the case. They will ask for a sample file, a remote-access session, or a deposit. They may even tell you to type a short string into the Recovery Portal, because the portal already prepared you to do that.

A demo that “unlocks one file” is not proof they can unlock the vacation photo. Anyone can open one junk file they control. Anyone can send you a code that makes the portal blink. Blinking is not Photos opening vacation.jpg again. If a later message skips the portal and asks for coin over ordinary email, that is still the same market, or a copycat standing in the same doorway. Do not answer. Do not help them set a price the original note left blank on purpose.

If someone claims they found the C2 server and can broker a conversation, that is still the same shop. The original flyer never printed a server. A broker for an unpublished door is selling access they cannot show. Report that message. Do not test it with a file from your Documents folder.

8. Payment and guessing close nothing

Paying a stranger for a decryption code is not a guarantee. The people who send the note can take the money and disappear. They can send a string that only makes the portal show an error. They can come back later and lock the same machine again. An empty box makes that outcome easier, not harder. You cannot leave a review on a field that never held a key.

Guessing is the free version of the same dead end. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain. There is no printed code in the note. There is no printed code in the portal. Typing filenames, cipher names, or forum strings into DECRYPT does not rebuild a JPEG. It only keeps you in the window while the rest of the disk still needs a real plan.

If this is a company machine, tell counsel and your incident lead. If this is a home PC, tell the people whose files lived on it. Change passwords from a clean device. Watch bank and email alerts. Opening the Recovery Portal again is not useful work. It is the checkout, even when the checkout is blank.

What To Do If Your Files End in .lqtoreq

Do not type a string into LQTOREQ RECOVERY PORTAL. Do not press DECRYPT to see what happens. Do not hunt the internet for a C2 URL the note never printed. Do not invent a server, a wallet, a mail address, or a chat ID to finish their flyer. The empty box is not a key waiting for you. If you already opened the portal before you stopped, close it. Do not send a sample file to a stranger who offered to fill the field.

STEP 1: Use Rkill to terminate suspicious programs.

  2. Run RKill.

    After downloading, double-click the iExplore.exe icon to kill malicious processes. In most cases, downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder.
    The program may take some time to search for and end various malware programs.

  2. Run the Installer

    When the download finishes, open your Downloads folder and double-click “esetonlinescanner.exe“.

    When the scan completes, the Found and resolved detections screen appears. Any threats found were automatically cleaned and quarantined — there’s nothing extra you need to do. Click View detailed results if you want to see exactly what was removed.

STEP 6: Restore the files encrypted by ransomware

Unfortunately, in most cases, it’s not possible to recover the files encrypted by this ransomware virus because the private key which is needed to unlock the encrypted files is only available through the attackers. Option 3: Try to restore your files with ShadowExplorer

This ransomware will attempt to delete all shadow copies when you first start any executable on your computer after becoming infected. Thankfully, the infection is not always able to remove the shadow copies, so you should continue to try restoring your files using this method.

  2. Install ShadowExplorer.

    Double-click on the ShadowExplorer-x.x-setup file to start the installation process, then follow the on-screen promts to install this program.

  3. Select snapshot date.

    Open ShadowExplorer and then from the top bar select the drive where the files that you want to save are located, then select from the snapshot available one previous to this infection.

  4. Export the files that you want to recover.

    Once you have found a copy of the original file or folder, right-click on it and the select “Export”. A window will prompt you where you want to save the file or folder.

Keep every .lqtoreq name exactly as it is. Do not bulk-rename 1.jpg.lqtoreq back to 1.jpg, or vacation.jpg.lqtoreq back to vacation.jpg, or invoice-2026.pdf.lqtoreq back to a normal PDF. Stripping the extra ending is not a repair. It can make a later trusted tool worse, not better. The original name is already sitting in front of .lqtoreq.

Keep README_LQTOREG.txt with the locked files. Do not “clean up” every copy of the note. Do not rename it to README_LQTOREQ.txt so the brands match. The G in LQTOREG is part of how you prove this was this strain and not a different locker that only sounds similar. The note is evidence. It is not a set of steps you should carry out.

Treat the empty Decryption Code field as a slot, not a lock. Do not paste a “universal code” from a comment. Do not pay anyone to dictate digits into that box. Do not run a third-party decryptor you found in an ad, a YouTube description, or a chat “recovery” channel because it promised to fill the portal. Leave the locked copies alone until a trusted project publishes a tool for this family. None is public now.

Do not invent a C2 address. Do not follow a hostname, an IP, or an onion string a stranger labels as the LQTOREQ operator panel. The original note never printed one. A public write-up on this strain says there is no real way to contact the operators, so you cannot decrypt by chasing that sentence. If a later message quotes your folder and offers “the real C2,” that is still the same shop.

A blank portal is not a reason to skip a report. File the incident through the CISA ransomware reporting page or the FBI IC3 desk if those are the right doors for you. The clock in your head is theirs. The files are already locked. Another night of typing into an empty box will not change the bytes.

The Bottom Line

LQTOREQ ransomware is a locker with a readable filename, a README that does not match its own brand, and a recovery portal that asks for a code it never gives. It keeps the old name and appends .lqtoreq. 1.jpg becomes 1.jpg.lqtoreq. The note is README_LQTOREG.txt, with a G, not a Q. The pop-up is LQTOREQ RECOVERY PORTAL. The Decryption Code field is empty. The note claims AES-256, points you at a C2 server with no address, and tells you not to decrypt yourself. A public write-up on this strain says there is no real way to contact the operators. There is no public free decryptor known for this strain.

Do not pay. Do not type into that box. Do not hunt a C2 URL. Do not rename the pile in bulk. If you take one sentence with you, take this. A folder of names ending in .lqtoreq, plus README_LQTOREG.txt and an empty decrypt box, is ransomware on the first sighting. Treat it that way before anyone offers to fill the field.

10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

    If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.

    If you saw a scary “update now” pop-up: close it and update only through your device settings or the official app store.

  3. Use layered protection: antivirus plus an ad blocker.

    If your browser is acting weird: remove unknown extensions, reset the browser, then run a full scan.

  4. Install apps, software, and extensions only from official sources.

  7. Crypto rule: never pay a “fee” to withdraw or recover money.

    Common patterns include fake profits, then “tax,” “gas,” or “verification” fees. Another is a “recovery agent” who demands upfront crypto.

    If you already sent crypto: stop paying, save evidence (wallet addresses, TXIDs, chats), and report the scam to the platform used.

  8. Secure your accounts with unique passwords and 2FA (start with email).

    • Report it: to the payment provider, marketplace, social platform, exchange, or wallet service involved.

These rules are intentionally simple. Most online losses happen when decisions are rushed. Slow down, verify independently, and use payment methods and account controls that give you recourse.
