Watch Out for Malicious Amazonaws.com Links Used in Scams

Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides cloud computing power to millions of customers, including Amazon.com. Unfortunately, scammers are now using AWS infrastructure to host phishing sites and bypass security filters. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explain how cybercriminals abuse amazonaws.com, what to watch out for, and most importantly, how to keep yourself protected.

Overview of Amazonaws.com Scams

Amazonaws.com is a legitimate domain owned by Amazon as part of their Amazon Web Services (AWS) offering. AWS allows customers to rent cloud computing resources to host websites and applications. The problem arises when scammers create AWS accounts to host phishing sites.

Cybercriminals exploit the trusted amazonaws.com domain to bypass security filters and blacklists. At first glance, links hosted on AWS seem harmless. But unsuspecting users can get redirected to various scam pages designed to steal personal information and money.

Some of the phishing schemes hosted on AWS include:

  • Fake prize/gift notifications that trick users into handing over financial details
  • Tech support scams impersonating Apple, Microsoft or other brands
  • Malware downloaders that infect devices with viruses and spyware
  • Services that sign up victims for unwanted paid subscriptions
  • Call and text spam lists that flood users with relentless offers

Scammers heavily obfuscate the redirects to conceal the ultimate landing site. This makes the AWS-hosted links seem legitimate, since the amazonaws.com domain lends credibility. But anyone can sign up for AWS and use it for evil.

The rise of malicious AWS use demonstrates how scammers adapt to avoid blacklists and filters. But with knowledge of their tactics, users can identify and avoid these phony AWS links spreading on social media, email, ads, and search.

How Scammers Exploit Amazon Web Services for Phishing Sites

Let’s break down the steps cybercriminals take to abuse AWS infrastructure and evade detection:

1. Sign Up for an AWS Account

Amazon allows anyone to create an AWS account and rent web servers. Scammers provide bogus business info to sign up while concealing their identity.

2. Create Phony Content Hosted on AWS

The scammers design fake webpages hosted on AWS servers with promotions, tech support scripts, downloads, etc. to execute their schemes.

3. Obfuscate Links to Hide the Scam

The phishing links use convoluted redirects with multiple subdomains of amazonaws.com to disguise the eventual malicious landing site.

4. Spread Links on Social Media, Emails, Ads

Scammers heavily blast out the AWS-hosted links using spam, fake accounts, compromised profiles, pop-ups, and other techniques.

5. Leverage Amazon’s Reputation

The amazonaws.com domain adds perceived credibility, since Amazon is a trusted brand. This helps the links evade blacklist filters.

6. Redirect Victims to Malware, Scams

When users click the AWS links, the convoluted redirects ultimately take them to scam pages to steal personal information via malicious code.

7. Pollute Search Results

Scammers optimize the content for SEO so the AWS-hosted phishing pages rank highly in search results, further spreading their reach.

As you can see, scammers undertake considerable effort to disguise phishing sites as legitimate through AWS. But with knowledge of their tactics, you can detect the warning signs of a malicious AWS link before engaging.

What to Do If You Land on a Suspicious Amazonaws.com Page

If you unfortunately clicked an AWS-hosted link and landed on a shady web page, don’t panic. Here are the steps to take right away:

1. Close Out of the Suspicious Site

Exit out of the webpage immediately. The longer you stay on the scam page, the higher the risk of your device being compromised.

2. Check Browser Extensions

Some scam sites try to install rogue browser extensions without your permission. Check your extensions and remove any unknown or suspicious ones.

3. Run a Virus Scan on Your Device

Run a deep scan with Malwarebytes to detect and quarantine any malware, spyware, or viruses that may have reached your computer, phone, or tablet.

4. Clear Your Cache and Browsing History

Open your browser settings and clear the cache and browsing history to delete any malicious code that may have been downloaded.

5. Reset Your Passwords

Change the passwords on any online accounts that have sensitive personal or financial data, just to be safe. Make them long and complex.

6. Monitor Your Accounts and Credit

Keep an eagle eye on bank, credit card, and other account statements as well as your credit reports for any signs of unauthorized access or identity theft.

7. Avoid Suspicious Follow-Up Emails or Calls

Scammers may try to leverage the link click to phish for more data. Disregard any emails, calls, or texts related to the suspicious link.

Taking these precautionary measures immediately can help prevent lasting harm if you accidentally click an AWS-hosted phishing link.

To remove Unwanted Apps and Malware from your Mac, follow these steps:

STEP 1: Remove malicious profiles

Profiles are used by IT admins in businesses to control the behavior of their Macs. These profiles can configure a Mac to do many different things, some of which are not otherwise possible.
When it comes to home users, adware and browser hijackers are using the configuration profile to prevent users from removing malicious programs from the computer. This also prevents the user from changing that behavior in the browser’s settings.

In this first step, we will check your computer to see if any configuration profiles are installed. To do this, follow the below steps:

  1. Open “System Preferences”

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.

  2. Search for “Profiles”

When the System Preferences window opens, search for the Profiles icon.
Search for Profiles in System Preferences

How to Identify Malicious Amazonaws.com Links

Here are some tips for analyzing links to determine if an amazonaws.com URL is legit or an attempted phishing site:

  • Hover over links to preview the actual URL destination before clicking. See if it uses an odd sequence of subdomains.
  • Search for the page title in quotes to check if it shows up on any cybersecurity threat lists for phishing or malware.
  • Look for spelling errors throughout the page content, images, URLs, and titles—a clear red flag.
  • Verify boasted claims like contests and free gifts by searching official brand sites. Scams typically impersonate real promotions.
  • Analyze page quality. Phishing sites tend to be hastily assembled with multiple design and functionality flaws.
  • Check for pressure tactics urging you to act immediately or provide sensitive data—a hallmark of scams.
  • Use web browser warnings. Built-in phishing and malware filters will alert you of suspicious or reported pages.

Equipping yourself with knowledge of common AWS phishing tactics makes it much easier to determine legitimacy before providing information or downloading anything. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.

Frequently Asked Questions About Malicious Amazonaws.com Links

The rise in phishing scams abusing Amazon Web Services infrastructure raises many questions for users. Here are answers to some commonly asked FAQs about identifying and protecting yourself from malicious Amazonaws.com links.

What is Amazon Web Services (AWS)?

AWS is Amazon’s cloud computing platform that lets customers rent servers, storage, databases, and other computing resources.

How are scammers misusing AWS?

Scammers sign up for AWS accounts then create phishing sites hosted on AWS servers and optimized to rank high in search results.

Why use AWS for phishing sites?

The trusted amazonaws.com domain helps scam links bypass security filters. AWS also provides computing resources to build and run phishing infrastructure.

What type of scams are hosted on AWS?

Some common ones include fake gift card offers, tech support scams, malware downloaders, services that sign you up for unwanted subscriptions, and more.

How can I identify a malicious AWS link?

Look for odd subdomain sequences, spelling errors, pressure tactics, poor quality pages, impersonated brands, and browser warnings.

What should I do if I click an AWS phishing link?

Immediately close the site, scan devices, remove suspicious extensions, reset passwords, monitor accounts, and avoid related communications.

How can I protect myself from malicious AWS links?

Analyze links closely, use antivirus software, enable browser phishing filters, hover over links to inspect destinations, and avoid clicking questionable URLs.

Can legitimate sites also use AWS hosting?

Yes, many legitimate companies use AWS too. But scammers exploit AWS infrastructure specifically because it seems trusted.

Should I avoid all AWS links?

No, many legitimate AWS links are harmless. But extra scrutiny of any unusual AWS destinations is wise to filter out scammers.

How can I report a phishing site on AWS?

Notify Amazon AWS abuse teams, cybersecurity authorities, and antiphishing groups with details to get fraudulent sites shut down.

Staying vigilant against phishing involves analyzing links closely rather than blindly trusting or avoiding any particular domain. Scrutinize AWS destinations just as you would any link, and trust your instinct if anything seems suspicious.

The Bottom Line: Stay Vigilant Against Malicious Amazon AWS Links

Cybercriminals are always innovating new ways to bypass protections, with compromising Amazon Web Services infrastructure being a growing trend. But by learning their techniques, you can effectively protect yourself and avoid falling victim. Remember to use skepticism before clicking, and double check any questionable AWS-hosted links before interacting.

With awareness and consistent safe browsing habits, you can benefit from the convenience of the web while filtering out scammers attempting to take advantage through malicious use of trusted platforms like Amazon AWS. Staying informed on the latest cyberthreat news and trends is the best way to keep your data and devices secure in our increasingly interconnected world.

How to Stay Safe Online

Here are 10 basic security tips to help you avoid malware and protect your device:

  1. Use a good antivirus and keep it up-to-date.

    Shield Guide

It's essential to use a good quality antivirus and keep it up-to-date to stay ahead of the latest cyber threats. We are huge fans of Malwarebytes Premium and use it on all of our devices, including Windows and Mac computers as well as our mobile devices. Malwarebytes sits beside your traditional antivirus, filling in any gaps in its defenses, and providing extra protection against sneakier security threats.

  2. Keep software and operating systems up-to-date.

    updates-guide

Keep your operating system and apps up to date. Whenever an update is released for your device, download and install it right away. These updates often include security fixes, vulnerability patches, and other necessary maintenance.

  3. Be careful when installing programs and apps.

    install guide

Pay close attention to installation screens and license agreements when installing software. Custom or advanced installation options will often disclose any third-party software that is also being installed. Take great care in every stage of the process and make sure you know what it is you're agreeing to before you click "Next."

  4. Install an ad blocker.

    Ad Blocker

Use a browser-based content blocker, like AdGuard. Content blockers help stop malicious ads, Trojans, phishing, and other undesirable content that an antivirus product alone may not stop.

  5. Be careful what you download.

    Trojan Horse

A top goal of cybercriminals is to trick you into downloading malware—programs or apps that carry malware or try to steal information. This malware can be disguised as an app: anything from a popular game to something that checks traffic or the weather.

  6. Be alert for people trying to trick you.

    warning sign

Whether it's your email, phone, messenger, or other applications, always be alert and on guard for someone trying to trick you into clicking on links or replying to messages. Remember that it's easy to spoof phone numbers, so a familiar name or number doesn't make messages more trustworthy.

  7. Back up your data.

    backup sign

Back up your data frequently and check that your backup data can be restored. You can do this manually on an external HDD/USB stick, or automatically using backup software. This is also the best way to counter ransomware. Never connect the backup drive to a computer if you suspect that the computer is infected with malware.

  8. Choose strong passwords.

    lock sign

Use strong and unique passwords for each of your accounts. Avoid using personal information or easily guessable words in your passwords. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts whenever possible.

  9. Be careful where you click.

    cursor sign

Be cautious when clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. These could potentially contain malware or phishing scams.

  10. Don't use pirated software.

    Shady Guide

Avoid using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing programs, keygens, cracks, and other pirated software that can often compromise your data, privacy, or both.

To avoid potential dangers on the internet, it's important to follow these 10 basic safety rules. By doing so, you can protect yourself from many of the unpleasant surprises that can arise when using the web.
