10 Rules to Avoid Online Scams

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.

    warning sign

Most scams win by creating urgency. Verify using a trusted method: type the website address yourself, use the official app, or call a known number (not the one in the message).

If you already clicked: close the page, do not enter passwords, and run a malware scan.

  2. Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated.

    updates guide

Updates patch security holes used by malware and malicious ads. Turn on automatic updates where possible.

If you saw a scary “update now” pop-up: close it and update only through your device settings or the official app store.

  3. Use layered protection: antivirus plus an ad blocker.

    shield guide

Antivirus helps block malware. An ad blocker reduces scam redirects, phishing pages, and malvertising.

If your browser is acting weird: remove unknown extensions, reset the browser, then run a full scan.

  4. Install apps, software, and extensions only from official sources.

    install guide

Avoid cracked software, “keygens,” and random downloads. During installs, choose Custom/Advanced and decline bundled offers you do not recognize.

If you already installed something suspicious: uninstall it, restart, and scan again.

  5. Treat links and attachments as untrusted by default.

    cursor sign

Phishing often impersonates delivery services, banks, and popular brands. If it is unexpected, do not open attachments or log in through the message.

If you entered credentials: change the password immediately and enable 2FA.

  6. Shop safely: research the store, then pay with protection.

    trojan horse

Be cautious with brand-new stores, “closing sale” stories, and prices that make no sense. Prefer credit cards or PayPal for dispute options. Avoid wire transfers, gift cards, and crypto payments.

If you already paid: contact your card issuer or PayPal quickly to dispute the transaction.

  7. Crypto rule: never pay a “fee” to withdraw or recover money.

    lock sign

Common patterns include fake profits, then “tax,” “gas,” or “verification” fees. Another is a “recovery agent” who demands upfront crypto.

If you already sent crypto: stop paying, save evidence (wallet addresses, TXIDs, chats), and report the scam to the platform used.

  8. Secure your accounts with unique passwords and 2FA (start with email).

    lock sign

Use a password manager and unique passwords for every account. Enable 2FA using an authenticator app when possible.

If you suspect an account takeover: change passwords, sign out of all devices, and review recent logins and recovery settings.

  9. Back up important files and keep one backup offline.

    backup sign

Backups protect you from ransomware and device failure. Keep at least one backup on an external drive that is not always connected.

If you suspect infection: do not connect backup drives until the system is clean.

  10. If you think you are a victim: stop losses, document evidence, and escalate fast.

    warning sign

Move quickly. Speed matters for disputes, account recovery, and limiting damage.

    • Stop payments and contact: do not send more money or respond to the scammer.
    • Call your bank or card issuer: block transactions, replace the card if needed, and start a dispute or chargeback.
    • Secure your email first: change the email password, enable 2FA, and remove unfamiliar recovery options.
    • Secure other accounts: change passwords, enable 2FA, and log out of all sessions.
    • Scan your device: remove suspicious apps or extensions, then run a full malware scan.
    • Save evidence: screenshots, emails, order pages, tracking pages, wallet addresses, TXIDs, and chat logs.
    • Report it: to the payment provider, marketplace, social platform, exchange, or wallet service involved.

These rules are intentionally simple. Most online losses happen when decisions are rushed. Slow down, verify independently, and use payment methods and account controls that give you recourse.

  3. Oh you are an angel! (Again) I just picked up this virus for the second time….this time was much less stressful, as I knew where to go for my fix; right here! Your thoughtful steps are easy to follow and solve the problem….now if I could figure out where I’m picking up this crud. Question; do you know how long after I’ve visited the infected website that the virus appears on my computer? Knowing this might help me determine what website it might be.
    Thanks again!!!

    • Hello Sara,
The new variants of this virus can wait up to 24 hours before actually showing the first signs of infections….
      Stay safe!

  4. Thank you for this guide, I’ve caught this once or twice in the past, admittedly by connecting to shifty websites. This time I caught it I was researching something related to math theory though, which just offends me to no end. You can expect to get mugged if you’re walking through a seedy neighborhood but when it happens 5 feet from your front door its just wrong.

  5. Thank you for sharing your insites with us mere mortals! We’re not worthy! Thank you, seriously, you saved my bacon!

  6. I ran the anti-malware software but it didnt find anything, before i used a microsoft scanner that my college sort of enforced us to have over norton, and i used combofix right after, but i couldnt use IE afterwords because it was “marked for deletion” and asked if i “wanted it deleted” so whats up?

  11. This fix worked fine! I had the advantage of having two PC’c so I could dl things to a thumbdrive to transfer if I had difficulty with the infected PC.
    Thanks for your help!!

  12. Appears to have worked but when I tried to download the hostfix.bat link I got an unspecified error and then it asked for a disk to be put in. Anyone have that before?

    • I get the error message, too. This whole process has worn me out, and trying to find an answer to HitmanPro is the last straw. Guess I’ll have to survive without running it.

  13. Thank you so much. These were the easiest instructions to follow even thought it took concentration and patience. My son’s computer was affected from clicking on something called funmoods tool bar. sigh…. But your fix worked smoothly and as written.

  14. This guide is not working for me. In the Safe Mode with Networking. I can not connect to the Internet. So, I tried registration code in Normal mode and the Security Shield messages stopped popping up. I can access the Internet now, but I can not download RKill or Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware to try and kill this virus. Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it? Do you have to do everything from the Safe Mode with Networking?

  15. I found that even with all of the above steps, the (randomly named) main executable continued to reside in \users\%username%\appdata\local … The malware kept coming back until I killed it there.

    • Jim, how do you kill it there? I am not computer savvy, so all of these steps are causing me severe stress(lol!!!). I have not made it to the end yet but want to be prepared if your circumstances become mine as well. Thx!

      • Please follow the guide,Malwarebytes and HitmanPro should detect and remove the PC infection.

      • Well Stelian, I followed the rest of the steps and everything seems to be working fine now. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this solution for losers like me who would have had absolutely no idea what to do without you!!! I started getting the “you’re infected” warnings after clicking on one of my favorite gossip sites. Could I have “gotten it” from there??? Not that it really matters I guess.

        Thanks again!
