Beware the Windows Key + R Fake Pop-Ups – ClickFix Malware EXPOSED

If a pop-up or verification page tells you to press Windows key + R, paste something with Ctrl + V, and then press Enter, stop. This is not a normal CAPTCHA or browser check. It is a social-engineering technique used to make people run malware on their own computers.

The Windows key + R shortcut is safe by itself. It only opens the legitimate Windows Run dialog. The danger begins when an unfamiliar website places a command on your clipboard and persuades you to paste and execute it.

Overview

Windows key + R fake pop-ups are malware-delivery pages that disguise operating-system commands as a security check, CAPTCHA, browser repair, video fix, or human-verification step. Security researchers commonly call this technique ClickFix.

The page may copy Cloudflare, Google reCAPTCHA, Microsoft, a browser warning, or a familiar website. Its design changes, but the core instruction is usually the same: open Windows Run, paste clipboard content, and press Enter.

This sequence matters because it moves the attack out of the browser and into Windows. Instead of exploiting a software vulnerability, the criminals convince the visitor to launch their command through a trusted Windows feature.

If you are here because you already followed part of the instructions, use this quick answer:

  • You only pressed Windows key + R: You opened the Run dialog. Nothing was installed merely by opening it. Press Escape and close the suspicious page.
  • You pasted with Ctrl + V but did not press Enter: Close Run without executing the text. Replace the clipboard by copying a harmless word. The pasted command should not have run.
  • You pasted and pressed Enter: Treat the computer as potentially compromised. Disconnect it from the internet and follow the recovery steps in this guide.
  • You only viewed the pop-up: Close the tab. Seeing the page alone does not mean its command executed.

Is pressing Windows key + R safe?

Yes. Windows key + R is a standard Windows shortcut. It opens the Run dialog, a small tool that lets users launch applications, folders, settings, scripts, and administrative utilities by typing their names or paths.

Using Run for a command you understand can be perfectly legitimate. For example, an IT technician may ask an employee to open a known Windows management tool during a support session.

What is not legitimate is an unsolicited website asking you to paste text you have not inspected into Run. A real CAPTCHA does not need access to a Windows command launcher. A website can verify a browser interaction without asking the visitor to execute system commands.

The shortcut is therefore not the threat. The attacker’s clipboard command and the instruction to press Enter are the threat. Think of Run as a doorway: opening the door is harmless, but allowing an unknown person to choose what passes through it is not.

What does the fake pop-up usually say?

Wording varies between campaigns. The pop-up may say that verification failed, a browser error must be repaired, a video codec is missing, a DNS problem needs fixing, or a security check must be completed.

A common version displays instructions similar to these:

Other variants add a fake verification ID, progress spinner, Ray ID, error code, or countdown. These details are visual props. They do not make the instructions safer or prove that the page belongs to the company whose logo is displayed.

The same Windows Run trick also appears without Cloudflare branding, which is why recognizing the keyboard sequence is more useful than memorizing one page design.

Why do scammers use Windows Run?

Most people have learned to be suspicious of unknown program downloads. A pop-up that says “download and open this file” may therefore be ignored or blocked by the browser.

ClickFix changes the presentation. The website claims that the visitor is performing a manual verification or fixing an innocent problem. The victim still launches malicious code, but the action feels like a technical step rather than a download.

The operation also abuses tools already included with Windows. A pasted command can start PowerShell, Command Prompt, Windows Script Host, mshta.exe, rundll32.exe, or another legitimate component. Those tools are not malicious, but attackers can misuse their capabilities to retrieve and run harmful content.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence describes ClickFix as a widespread social-engineering technique that has delivered information stealers, remote-access trojans, loaders, rootkits, and other malware. The lure is successful precisely because it asks the user to complete the execution chain.

How can a website put a command on the clipboard?

Modern browsers provide clipboard features for legitimate purposes, such as a “Copy” button beside a coupon code or account number. Access is restricted by browser rules and often requires a click or another user interaction.

A malicious page can disguise that interaction as a CAPTCHA checkbox, verification button, repair button, or “I’m not a robot” prompt. When the visitor clicks, the page can attempt to copy attacker-prepared text while showing instructions for the next steps.

The visitor may never see the full clipboard content. The command could be longer than the Run box, encoded, or constructed so that only an innocent-looking phrase appears at the visible end.

This is why pasting the line and trying to judge it visually is not a safe test. Do not paste it into Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, Terminal, an address bar, or any other place that might interpret part of it.

Can a command run just because it was copied?

Normally, copying text does not execute it. Opening Windows Run does not execute it either. The decisive step is pressing Enter, clicking OK, or otherwise launching the pasted content.

There can be exceptions if another malicious file, browser extension, or program is already active on the computer, but the standard ClickFix sequence relies on the victim completing all three steps. This distinction is important because it prevents unnecessary panic when someone stopped before execution.

If you pasted the text but did not press Enter, close the dialog with Escape. Then copy a harmless word so the unknown command is no longer on the clipboard. Do not return to the page to investigate it.

What can the pasted command do?

A Run command can launch a local program, contact a remote server, download a script, decode hidden instructions, create a scheduled task, or start another process. It may do several of these things in a fraction of a second.

The first command is often only a small loader. It connects to an attacker-controlled address and retrieves the next stage. That stage can perform system checks, avoid security tools, establish persistence, and install the final malware.

Different visitors can receive different commands. Operators may rotate their infrastructure throughout the day or show a harmless destination to security scanners. A page that appeared inactive during a later visit may still have delivered a working command earlier.

The absence of a visible download is not reassuring. PowerShell and other system tools can retrieve content in the background. A black window may flash briefly and disappear, or no obvious window may appear at all.

What malware is associated with Windows R scams?

The Windows key + R scam is a delivery method, not one specific virus. The final payload depends on the campaign, the victim’s location, the device, and what the operators are distributing at that moment.

Observed ClickFix campaigns have delivered several categories of malware:

  • Information stealers that collect browser passwords, authentication cookies, autofill records, cryptocurrency data, and files.
  • Remote-access trojans that give criminals ongoing control of the computer.
  • Loaders that download additional malware after the first command succeeds.
  • Banking malware designed to capture financial credentials or manipulate sessions.
  • Proxy malware that routes someone else’s traffic through the victim’s connection.
  • Ransomware precursors that help criminals prepare a later attack.

Microsoft tracks malicious fake CAPTCHA pages with detections including Trojan:HTML/FakeCaptcha. A security alert may use that name for the web lure even when the final downloaded malware has a different detection name.

It is not possible to identify a precise malware family from the pop-up’s appearance alone. Anyone claiming that every Windows R pop-up installs the same trojan is oversimplifying a delivery system that can change payloads rapidly.

What information could be stolen?

Information stealers are a common outcome because browsers and apps contain valuable data that can be collected quickly. A successful infection may expose much more than the account used on the website where the pop-up appeared.

Potential targets include:

  • Saved passwords and autofill information in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other browsers.
  • Session cookies that keep email, social media, shopping, and cloud accounts signed in.
  • Credit-card details and addresses stored in a browser profile.
  • Password-manager session data if the vault was unlocked.
  • Cryptocurrency wallet extensions, wallet files, seed phrases, and copied addresses.
  • Discord, Telegram, Steam, VPN, FTP, remote-desktop, and developer credentials.
  • Documents, screenshots, desktop files, and basic information about the device.

Stolen cookies are especially important. Changing a password does not always invalidate every active session automatically. Recovery should include signing out other devices and revoking existing sessions, not merely choosing a new password.

Where do Windows key + R fake pop-ups come from?

Many people encounter the lure after clicking a pop-up, advertisement, fake download button, streaming player, or link on a questionable website. Others arrive through malicious search ads, compromised legitimate websites, browser notification spam, or messages containing a booby-trapped link.

The page that displays the instructions may be several redirects away from the site the visitor first opened. This can make it feel as though the warning came from the browser, Windows, or a trusted service.

The address bar remains the best source of identity. Logos and company names inside the page are controlled by whoever built it. A Cloudflare logo on an unrelated domain does not turn the page into a Cloudflare service.

Warning signs that identify the scam

  • A website asks you to press Windows key + R as part of a CAPTCHA or human check.
  • The instructions continue with Ctrl + V and Enter.
  • The page asks you to open PowerShell, Command Prompt, Terminal, or Windows Run.
  • A “Fix,” “Verify,” or “I’m not a robot” button silently copies text.
  • The browser displays an unrelated or random-looking domain.
  • The page says you must run a command to view a video, download a file, or repair the browser.
  • A fake error claims that DNS, fonts, certificates, or browser components need an immediate command-line fix.
  • The page asks you to disable antivirus protection before continuing.

Any website instruction that requires pasting an unknown command into Windows should be treated as hostile. Legitimate services can verify a user inside the browser.

Real CAPTCHAs do not execute Windows commands

A genuine CAPTCHA might ask you to select a checkbox, identify objects, solve a simple visual prompt, or wait while the browser is checked. Some modern systems complete verification without any visible challenge.

For example, Cloudflare’s official Turnstile documentation describes managed, non-interactive, and invisible browser-based widgets. None require Windows Run, PowerShell, a downloaded verification tool, or a pasted command.

A real support technician might use Run while actively troubleshooting a known issue with you. That is a different context from an unexpected webpage claiming the shortcut proves you are human. Do not grant remote access or run commands for an unsolicited caller who appeared after the same pop-up.

How The Operation Works

The criminals build the campaign as a chain of replaceable parts. The advertisement, redirect service, fake verification page, command server, and final malware may all use different domains.

1. The visitor clicks an advertisement or compromised link

The initial click can come from a fake play button, download link, advertisement, search result, browser notification, email, or social-media message. A compromised legitimate website can also inject the first redirect without its owner’s knowledge.

Some campaigns open a new tab, while others replace the current page. Full-screen mode, dimmed backgrounds, and familiar security branding make the change feel like part of the original website.

2. A redirect system evaluates the visitor

The traffic system may examine the visitor’s country, browser, operating system, IP reputation, referral source, and previous visits. Windows users can receive the Win+R instructions while mobile users see ordinary advertising.

Known scanners or datacenter connections may be sent to a harmless page. This filtering helps the criminals keep their domains active and makes reports difficult to reproduce.

3. The landing page creates urgency and trust

The fake page imitates a recognizable service or presents a technical error. It may say that verification is required before the website loads, that unusual traffic was detected, or that a browser problem prevents access.

A progress animation and numbered steps reduce hesitation. The instructions are short enough to follow without thinking about what each keyboard action really does.

4. A click prepares the clipboard content

The page encourages the victim to click a verification control. That interaction can allow its script to copy a command to the clipboard. The page then claims the text is a verification code or repair instruction.

The copied line may use encoding, unusual spacing, shortened addresses, environment variables, or harmless-looking comments. Its purpose is to hide the meaningful behavior from a person who sees only a small part of it.

5. Windows key + R opens a trusted launcher

The first keyboard step opens Windows Run. No browser exploit is required. The victim voluntarily moves the attack into a legitimate operating-system interface.

At this stage, no malware should have launched merely because Run is open. The operation still needs the victim to paste and execute the prepared line.

6. Ctrl + V transfers the command

The second step places the clipboard text in Run. A long line may extend beyond the visible input box, preventing the visitor from reading it completely.

Some campaigns put a visible verification phrase at the end of the command. The phrase is a decoy. Earlier parts of the same line can still download or execute code.

7. Enter launches the first stage

Pressing Enter instructs Windows to process the pasted line. A built-in utility may open briefly, run in a hidden mode, or start a script without displaying a conventional installer.

The first stage often contacts a separate server. It can download another file, decode embedded content, or execute a second command held in memory.

8. The malware establishes access or steals data

A loader may create a scheduled task or startup entry so it returns after a restart. An information stealer can collect browser data within minutes, while a remote-access trojan can keep the machine connected to its operator.

The computer may continue to look normal. Quiet operation is valuable to criminals because it gives them time to sell credentials, reuse sessions, and add other malware.

9. The victim is redirected to reduce suspicion

After the command runs, the page may display a checkmark, load the expected video, show a harmless website, or claim that verification succeeded. This gives the victim a plausible explanation for the brief activity.

The original landing domain may disappear soon afterward. Operators can replace it while keeping the same advertisements and malware infrastructure.

If You Pressed Windows Key + R

Stay calm and match your response to the last action you completed. Opening Run and executing a command are not the same event.

If you only opened the Run dialog

Press Escape or click Cancel. Close the suspicious browser tab. Opening Run by itself does not install the malware described in this scam.

If the pop-up keeps returning, check the browser’s notification permissions and remove permission for unfamiliar sites. Also inspect extensions and recently installed applications, because adware or a malicious extension can cause repeated redirects.

If you pasted the text but did not press Enter

Do not click OK. Press Escape to close Run without launching the line. Copy a harmless word afterward to overwrite the clipboard content.

No command should have executed through Run if you stopped before Enter or OK. A normal security scan is still sensible if you reached the page through repeated redirects or opened any downloaded file.

If you pressed Enter or clicked OK

Assume the unknown command may have run successfully, even if nothing visible happened. Take the following steps in order.

  1. Disconnect the computer from the internet. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet. This can interrupt additional downloads, remote control, and ongoing data theft.
  2. Stop using the computer for sensitive tasks. Do not sign in to email, banking, payment apps, shopping accounts, work portals, cloud services, password managers, or cryptocurrency wallets.
  3. Use a different clean device for urgent account activity. A phone or computer that did not run the command is safer for changing passwords and contacting providers.
  4. Record the incident. Write down the domain, approximate time, browser, instructions followed, and anything that flashed on the screen. Photograph existing alerts, but do not revisit the page.
  5. Tell your workplace or school IT team immediately. If the device or any account belongs to an organization, let its security team coordinate the response. The command may expose shared systems and credentials.
  6. Run Microsoft Defender Offline. Open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, and run Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). The computer restarts and checks for threats before normal Windows is fully loaded. Microsoft explains the option in its official Windows Security guidance.
  7. Complete the full malware-removal process below. ClickFix attacks can use several stages. Removing one detected script or file does not prove that every downloaded component is gone.

STEP 2: Reset browsers back to default settings

In this step, we will remove spam notifications,  malicious extensions, and change to default any settings that might have been changed by malware.
Please note that this method will remove all extensions, toolbars, and other customizations but will leave your bookmarks and favorites intact. For each browser that you have installed on your computer, please click on the browsers tab below and follow the displayed steps to reset that browser.

Reset Chrome for Windows to default settings

We will now reset your Chrome browser settings to their original defaults. This will reset your startup page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs. It will also disable all extensions and clear temporary data like cookies. Your favorites, history, and saved passwords will not be cleared.

  1. Open the Chrome menu

    A confirmation window will appear. Click Reset settings.


    This will:



    • Restore the default search engine, homepage, and new tab page

    • Reset startup pages and pinned tabs

    • Disable installed extensions

    • Clear temporary cookies and website data


    Don’t worry: Chrome will not delete your bookmarks, browsing history, or saved passwords.


    Restart Chrome and perform a test search. If your searches now open normally in Google, you can stop here.


    If searches are still redirected through shady domains complete the additional step below.

  6. Remove persistent search hijacker data


    Only complete this step if the redirect continues after resetting Chrome.


    Some browser hijackers hide inside Chrome’s local search-engine database. A standard Chrome reset may not remove this database, which is why searches can continue to pass through shady sites.


    The following procedure creates a backup of the affected database and allows Chrome to build a new, clean version. This is safer and less disruptive than deleting the entire Chrome profile.


    First, prevent Chrome Sync from restoring the hijacked settings:



    1. Open a new Chrome tab.

    2. Copy the following address, paste it into Chrome’s address bar, and press Enter:

    3. Under Manage what you sync, select Customize sync.

    4. Turn off Settings and Extensions.

    5. You can leave Bookmarks and Passwords enabled so your important data remains synchronized.


    Note: Some newer Chrome versions may automatically redirect this address to the Google Account settings page. If that happens, locate the list of synchronized Chrome data and turn off Settings and Extensions there.

    Close PowerShell and reopen Google Chrome. Chrome will automatically create a clean search database for every local profile.


    Next, copy the following address, paste it into Chrome’s address bar, and press Enter:

    Make sure Google is selected as the default search engine. Test several searches from the address bar and confirm that they no longer pass through shady search engines.


    Your important Chrome data is protected: the PowerShell cleanup does not remove bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, cookies, or installed extensions. However, it may reset locally stored Autofill addresses and form suggestions.


    The original search database is not deleted. PowerShell renames it and adds search-hijacker-backup to its filename so it can be recovered if necessary.


    Keep Settings and Extensions synchronization disabled while testing Chrome. Do not enable every extension at once. Enable only the extensions you recognize, one at a time, and test Chrome after each one.


    If the redirect returns after enabling a particular extension, remove that extension immediately.

Reset Firefox for Windows to default settings

We will now reset your Firefox browser settings to their default. The reset feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks, passwords, web form auto-fill information, browsing history, and open tabs.

  1. Open the Firefox menu and click “Help”

    About the “Old Firefox Data” folder: Firefox saves a copy of your old profile on your desktop. If something you need is missing after the reset, you can recover it from this folder. Otherwise, delete the folder — it contains sensitive data like passwords and cookies, and may also still hold the malicious files you just removed.

Reset Microsoft Edge to default settings

We will now reset your Microsoft Edge browser settings to their default. This will reset your startup page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs. It will also disable all extensions and clear temporary data like cookies. Your favorites, history, and saved passwords will not be cleared.

  1. Open the Edge menu and click “Settings”

    If you are signed in to Microsoft Edge, a bad setting or extension may be stored in your Microsoft account and return after the reset.

    Copy the following address, paste it into the Edge address bar, and press Enter:

    On the Sync page, turn off these two options:

    • Settings
    • Extensions

    You can leave Favorites and Passwords turned on.

    If Edge says that sync is already off, simply continue to the next step.

    Important: Edge Sync settings are separate for each profile. If you use more than one Edge profile, switch to each affected profile and repeat this step.

    You do not need to sign out of your Microsoft account or delete the Edge profile.

  3. Open “Reset settings”

    In the left sidebar, click Reset settings.

    You can also open the reset page directly. Copy the following address, paste it into the Edge address bar, and press Enter:

    Copy the following address, paste it into the Edge address bar, and press Enter:

    Remove any extension you do not recognize or no longer use. Pay particular attention to extensions related to search, coupons, shopping, PDF conversion, browser protection, new tabs, or video downloading.

    Do not turn all extensions back on at the same time. Enable only the extensions you recognize and trust.

  7. Select a trusted search engine

    Copy the following address, paste it into the Edge address bar, and press Enter:

    Select Bing, Google, DuckDuckGo, or another search provider you trust and make it the default.

    Remove any unknown search engines, especially providers with strange names or addresses that you did not add yourself.

    Restart Edge and perform a search from the address bar. If searches are no longer redirected, you can stop here.

  8. If the redirect remains, clean the corrupted search data without deleting the Edge profile

    Use this additional step only if Edge continues to redirect searches after the normal reset.

    This command cleans the search-engine database from every local Edge profile while keeping your favorites, saved passwords, browsing history, cookies, and profiles.

    Before continuing: save anything you are working on because the command will close Microsoft Edge.

    The command does not permanently delete the original files. It renames them as backup files, and Edge creates a clean search database when it starts again.

    Note: this additional cleanup may also reset saved form-fill suggestions, saved addresses, and manually added search engines. It does not delete favorites, passwords, or browsing history.

  9. Reopen Edge and test the browser

    Open Microsoft Edge again, visit edge://settings/searchEngines, and select your preferred search engine.

    Perform several searches from the address bar to confirm that the redirect is gone.

    Keep synchronization for Settings and Extensions turned off until you are certain that the computer and extensions are clean. If you enable them again, turn them on one at a time and test Edge after each change.

  10. If Edge still redirects your searches

    Open edge://policy. If this is your personal computer and Edge displays unknown policies such as ExtensionInstallForcelist or DefaultSearchProvider, the hijacker may be installed outside the browser profile.

    In that situation, continue with the next malware-removal steps and run a complete antivirus scan. If the computer belongs to a company or school, contact its IT administrator before changing any policies.

Reset Internet Explorer to default settings

We will now reset your Internet Explorer browser settings to their default. You can reset Internet Explorer settings to return them to the state they were in when Internet Explorer was first installed on your computer.

  1. Go to “Internet Options”.

    Open Internet Explorer, click on the gear icon in the upper-right part of your browser, then select “Internet Options“.

  2. Select the “Advanced” tab, then click “Reset”

    In the “Internet Options” dialog box, select the “Advanced” tab, then click on the “Reset” button.

  3. Click on “Reset”.

    In the “Reset Internet Explorer settings” section, select the “Delete personal settings” checkbox, then click on the “Reset” button.

  4. Click on “Close”.

    When Internet Explorer has completed its task, click on the “Close” button in the confirmation dialogue box.
    Close your browser and then you can open Internet Explorer again.

STEP 3: Use Rkill to terminate suspicious programs

Next, we’ll download and run Rkill to stop any suspicious processes running in the background. This prevents the malware from interfering with the removal tools in the following steps.

RKill is a program that was developed at BleepingComputer.com that attempts to terminate known malware processes so that your normal security software can then run and clean your computer of infections. When RKill runs it will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies that stop us from using certain tools.

  1. Download Rkill.

    You can download RKill to your computer from the below link. When at the download page, click on the Download Now button labeled iExplore.exe. We are downloading a renamed version of Rkill (iExplore.exe) because some malware will not allow processes to run unless they have a certain filename.

  2. Run RKill.

    After downloading, double-click the iExplore.exe icon to kill malicious processes. In most cases, downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder.
    The program may take some time to search for and end various malware programs.

    When it is finished, the black window will close automatically and a log file will open. Do not restart your computer. Proceed to the next step in this guide.

STEP 4: Use Malwarebytes to remove Trojans and unwanted programs

Now we’ll install Malwarebytes and run a full scan to detect and remove infections, adware, and potentially unwanted programs from your computer.

  7. Rotate work and developer secrets. Replace VPN credentials, SSH keys, API tokens, cloud keys, repository access, remote-desktop passwords, and secrets stored in local text files. Review available access logs.
  8. Remove the source of repeated pop-ups. Revoke suspicious browser notifications, remove unknown extensions, uninstall unwanted recent software, and reset altered browser settings.
  9. Consider reinstalling Windows. A clean installation is the safest option when the computer contained high-value business, administrator, financial, password-manager, or cryptocurrency access, or when you cannot confidently establish what ran.
  10. Monitor for delayed abuse. Watch security alerts, login history, password-reset messages, forwarding rules, financial transactions, cloud activity, and wallet transfers for several weeks.

Do not rely on browser cleanup alone

Clearing cookies, cache, downloads, or browsing history does not remove a program launched through Windows Run. Once Enter was pressed, the activity occurred at the operating-system level.

Deleting the command from Run history does not reverse it either. The correct response combines malware scanning with account security because the command may already have stolen session data.

Do not paste the clipboard elsewhere to inspect it

A trained analyst can collect a command inside an isolated environment. On a normal personal computer, experimentation creates unnecessary risk. You could accidentally execute the line in another command-capable application.

Do not post the active command in public comments or send it to friends. If you report it to a security provider, submit it as text only through the provider’s designated channel and explain where it came from.

Should you reset the computer?

A full Windows reinstall offers more assurance than repeated scans when sensitive access was present. This is particularly important for workstations, administrator computers, developer systems, cryptocurrency devices, and machines used for financial accounts.

Back up personal documents carefully, but do not copy unknown scripts, installers, archives, shortcuts, or executable files into the clean system. Reinstall software from official sources and change passwords from a known-clean device.

The Bottom Line

Windows key + R is a legitimate and safe Windows shortcut. A website asking you to combine it with Ctrl + V and Enter is not a legitimate verification. It is trying to make you execute whatever command the site prepared.

If you stopped after opening Run, close it and leave the page. If you pasted but did not execute, cancel and clear the clipboard. If you pressed Enter, disconnect the computer, run the complete malware-removal process, and secure important accounts from a clean device.

The simplest rule is also the strongest: no genuine CAPTCHA, browser check, or human-verification service needs you to paste an unknown command into Windows.

Here are 10 practical safety rules to help you avoid malware, online shopping scams, crypto scams, and other online fraud. Each tip includes a quick “if you already got hit” action.

  1. Stop and verify before you click, log in, download, or pay.
