Gorhill creates Ublock, doesn't want to accept donations, answers all questions both legit and stupid - then gets tired of being broke and answering all questions (says the more he does for people, the more entitled they become,) has thousands of people using Ublock, then he abandons the product and posts a note on Github asking if anyone wants the thing. All this played out in full view of his customers in public.
Anyone know anything about Chris? Hope he has a better business head that Raymond.

Also for Firefox users:

  • Firefox: available on the Firefox Add-ons homepage, or for manual installation.
    • Due to Mozilla's review process, the version of uBlock available from the Add-ons homepage is currently often outdated. This isn't in our control.

0.9.4.0

Important:
If you install uBlock₀ manually:

Because now this version is a fork of the previous repo, I needed to also change name for installation purpose, which means that with this release, uBlock₀ will no longer fetch settings from former uBlock, so it will install as if it was the first time.

Please backup all your settings using a prior release -- if not done yet. You can restore them all with this release. This can be easily done through the Settings pane in uBlock₀'s dashboard: just click the"Restore from file" button.

If you install from the Chrome/Opera store, there is nothing to do.

Related issue: Make this version of uBlock to be installed alongside with gorhill's.

New:
  • New per-site switch to toggle cosmetic filtering on/off:
  • Per-site switches can now be manually edited manually from within the "My rules" panes.
    • So for example, this now allows to do non-recommended things like to disable strict blocking everywhere (no-strict-blocking: * true).
  • When a page is blocked because of strict blocking, the user is now given the choice to disable strict blocking for the whole domain.

uBlock Origin extension taken down from Chrome Store by Google

The past week has not been easy for uBlock users as lots of things happened in that time. The first thing that happened was that Raymond Hill (Gorhill), the creator of uBlock, left the project.

It is up to this day not really clear what led to the decision only that he made it and that someone else took over.

Then, Gorhill forked the original uBlock and created uBlock₀ or uBlock Origin (what is it with those names?).

And now, uBlock Origin was taken down by Google from the company's Chrome Web Store. If you try to load the extension's store pageyou get an item not found message and the claim that "the item may have been removed by its author".

The admin dashboard of the account shows taken down as the status and basic information on top that states that the extension did not comply with policies or terms of service.

Google has a track record of being vague when it comes to bans and take downs. The company usually refers only to its policies or terms of services but gives no further information to content owners which often leaves them puzzled as to what just happened and what the content violation is all about.

This happened to Gorhill who does not know the exact reason why the extension was taken down as none was provided by Google.

After inquiring about that, he received an email stating that further details about the violation were sent to the linked email account. Gorhill stated that he never received that email on the other hand and since Google did not include the details in the reply email, no light was shed on the issue.

Some users suggested that the similarity to uBlock (same icon, similar name, functionality, layout) might have been the reason for the take down as it looks like a copycat on first glance.

These quick fixes may or may not fix the issue. Since Google has not responded yet all that Gorhill can do at this point is to use the trial and error approach. Make a fix, upload to Chrome Store, see what happens.

That's far from ideal though and it would obviously be a lot easier if Google would include a list of the violations in the dashboard so that extension authors can address them head on.

The uBlock Origin extension is still available on Github from where it can be downloaded and installed. Depending on which version of Chrome you are running, you may need to install it using Developer Mode.

Seems like google do not like real adblockers without whitelisting some stuff like abp or other blockers. Similar happens in the past often when google simply dosnt like how well and often downloaded a extensions goes when the extension dont accept what google want.

Its a policy even before for Google, if anyone disobey the terms and conditions especially in advertising then it will be block or taken down, of course advertisement brought out money as precious and shouldn't be a disrupt for progress. ;)

Well whatever happened between Gorhill and Google it seems to be resolved because uBlock Origins is back up in the webstore, with the last update being yesterday. :)

EDIT: Which is as I see in the post above one version behind, but still.

Uo is exactly the old Ublock and will stay basically the same. What is now uBlock is forked off and free to develop. I went to the new home page and didn't see any clue as to the development plan. For now I'm sticking with Uo, but I'll watch the new one.

Would it not be better to make two different threads, now that there are two different versions of uBlock?
