Those who don't care don't care at all.Probably, but "be cautious when performing this evidently hazardous action" still comes off a crap advice in my opinion.
The reason I've heard is to prevent renaming files, including extensions, when renaming files.I wonder why extensions aren't shown by default. I only see it causing security issues. Why does MS do it?
