FRST.gif
Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine.

Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on
    FRST.gif
    icon and select
    RunAsAdmin.jpg
Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

Laptop went into sleep mode while FRST was running because the power cable became unplugged. Fixlog attached. The log seems to indicate a successful fix.

Only 1 instance of Com Surrogate

Download ESET Poweliks Cleaner
http://download.eset.com/special/ESETPoweliksCleaner.exe

When the download is complete, navigate to your Desktop, double-click ESETPoweliksCleaner.exe.
Read the terms of the End-user license agreement and click Agree if you agree to them.

The tool will run automatically. If the cleaner finds a Poweliks infection, press the Y key on your keyboard to remove it.

If Poweliks was detected "Win32/Poweliks was successfully removed from your system" will be displayed.
Press any key to exit the tool.

After removing an infection we highly recommend that you restart your computer. The infection should now be removed and you should be able to access the web content that was being blocked.

Just sent you some beers. Thank you for the prompt reply. Computer seems to be ok

I want to learn more about this.
-How are we getting the poweliks infections on 2 of our machines at home?
-Are the experts using scripts or are manually aggregating the items from frst.txt for the fixlist.txt? I want to learn how to do this.
Explanation and reading links would be much appreciated.

Poweliks

The key features of it, making it non typical:

1) This malware lives in registry value.
2) Non typical dropper self-deletion method, nothing zero day though.
3) Malware startup location protection in a backdoor Sirefef way.
4) It downloads, installs and uses Windows KB968930 (MS PowerShell).

I am 6 years working malware removal, not easy to explain :)

The Importance of Software Updating:

In order to stay protected it is
very important that you regularly update all of your software. Cybercriminals depend on the apathy of users around software updates to keep their malicious endeavor running.

Operating systems, such as Windows, and applications, such as Adobe Reader or JAVA, are used by tens of millions of computers and devices around the world, making them a huge target for cybercriminals. Downloading updates and installing them can sometimes be tedious, but the advantages you get from the updates are certainly worth it.
