This takes care of the low hanging fruit, it will stop common criminal malware like trojans, backdoors and ransomware.

But I don't sit awake at night worrying about criminal malware, it's high volume and easily detectable through spam, YouTube downloads cracks or keygens.

But for professionally designed and implemented attacks then it's game on and any device can be compromised with enough time and skill.
Yes I agree. Though I don't worry about such attacks as I don't own anything that would attract attackers to use their time and skills to compromise my devices.

You post on security forums; I would think you are in some database or watch list somewhere? No? I guess we all are on some list if I'm thinking logically.

Maybe with an added dose of paranoia, but nothing surprises me these days.

I don't know the details, but my wife worked in a US Congressional local office a few years ago, and when they had a computer issue, they flew in 2 techs from some well-known government contractor (don't recall the name) and they were serious dudes in black suits. I just happened to be there that day and I was scary-impressed.
Do you remember whether they asked you to look into a pen of sorts? ;)

If I could recall looking into a "pen" then it probably didn't work. I do recall trying to have a friendly casual conversation with one of them, (my wife was actually Director of that office) and was told to step-away... I do recall those office pc were really locked down. PS more like black jumpsuits. I kid you not.

Sometimes it's unavoidable. You have to choose between cool game mod with a chance of infection or stick to the boring original version. Any kind of whitelisting is useless since users have to trust that file.
First you've got to Remember Always that Security is Important. Just think about what the consequences are: you have to re-image your machine, you have to restore data, you have to re-install all the damn games. Several hours of work vs. some stupid game mod. Like the prayer goes: lead us not into temptation.
