It is a bit scary. I always disable my webcam. So that helps a bit for me.

Yes and that's how technology evolved from its risks. Sometimes we need to put trust even though it can provide problematic issue to the user example like Facebook mentioned in that article.
They missed an important fact - your webcam is not the only thing that could be spying on you. Most computers have a mic...at least since 2009, Chinese APT malware have been using the mic to spy on meetings and conferences.
We really should be using a tape to cover the webcam and either remove or just try to soundproof the mic.
