A recent series of leaked Intel slides have come to detail the performance of the Xeon E5 in comparison with Westmere-EP.

The new Xeon E5 chips are also known under the code name of Sandy Bridge-EP and feature a series of changes when compared with the desktop version of these CPUs.

These include support for up to eight processing cores, which can run a maximum of sixteen threads thanks to Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology, up to 20 MB of L3 cache memory, as well as the presence of dual QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) links.

The latter feature was added to the specs list in order to enable multi-socket system support, as it provides the chips with a high-bandwidth inter-socket communication interface.

Just like their desktop counterparts, the Xeon E5 CPUs also feature a quad-channel DDR3 built-in controller, but this time the maximum amount of memory that can be addressed by each processor was increased to 384GB, providing a total of 768GB of memory for dual-socket systems.

Together with the details regarding the Xeon E5-series chips, the slides, which have come into the possession of TechPowerUp website, also show some performance estimates for these chips when compared to the Xeon X5690.

Depending on the task run, the performance boost offered by the upcoming Xeon E5-2600 series CPUs varies between 50 and a whopping 120 percent in comparison with that of the Westmere-EP chip.

Xeon, i thought this processor for server?

They are mainly used for server/business end computers, because of all the video editing they have to do and the servers for powering computer to the internet.

By the time I buy a new computer hopefully we'll have 16 or 32 core CPUs out =p That will be nice.

Can i change my processor with this..i newbie in this :)

Yeah sure you can change to this, if you buy a new computer or buy a new processor.

Frist you need to know what motherboard you have, and what kind of socket you have. Just tell me the cpu you have.

if you want a server cpu you need a server-mother motherboard (they are expensive) and that can be very expensive (the motherboard can cost from 200$ to 600$) and the cpu can cost from 1000$ up to 2000$.

If you want to build a horsepower I suugest you buy two identical motherboard, two cpu (for each motherboard) and cluster them (they will then work as one). i7-3930 is a Xeon cpu but two of the cores are disabled.

If you want build a server I suggest you take a server-motherboard with 2,3 or 4 sockets from AMD, AMD's high-end bulldozer 16cores cpu costs for about 500$. I recommend AMD since they are cheaper and the server might be more power than an intel-base server for the same price

Might wait till they come down in price here. Then I might go out and take a look at them.

Which system-based server are you thinking about?

For a game server, so then I can host games for friends and what not.

Having a real server will be very expensive, as I have said in skype, so it's better to make two or more desktop with high-end cpu.

Ivy-bridge is around the corner so you can some money for that otherwise haswell will come 2013, which will have significant performance against Ivy-bridge (20% per core it's said).

if you truly want a server with multiple cpu (two or more) I suggest you take AMD's solutions. The best on is Opteron 6200 (take the one with lowest W since there are small differences between the GHz)

Yeah, okay will have to start saving no matter what :p

Have to consider getting 2 desktops, also the advantage is I think that I can get high end graphics for the game servers that I'm hoping to host.

Yes thats right, many people prefer to have server that don't manage, to get high internet not cheap and cost of maintainance can take a lot of money.

The server is not responsible for the graphics, unless such thing is mentioned (then you need a high-end nvida/amd solution with passive cooling (Quadro, Tesla, FirePro and so on) which cost alot.), so the server mainly needs high-end cpu, high-end hdd and a basic gpu for the monitor to display the necessary information.

I see, so it's better to get 1 powerfull sektop computer with this CPU and graphics so that I can host these powerful games?

Yes if you want to get a cheaper and more efficient server. Don't forget that it all depends how many you want to be one on server, The internet bandwidth is important besides the hardware.

My internet will support at least 2 servers and the bandwidth is 500 GB which is more then enough. :)
