New threats against Android phones leapt by 76% in the last quarter, according to security firm McAfee.

The company's quarterly threat report claimed that Android was now the fastest-growing vector for mobile malware as the popularity of handsets running Google's mobile OS makes them more attractive to attackers.

"This quarter the count of new Android-specific malware moved to number one, with J2ME (Java Micro Edition), coming in second while suffering only a third as much malware," the company said in its quarterly threat report.

This is just the begining of this attacks ... Its easy to create malware for android and the benefits are immediate and huge...
Cybercriminals are using trojanized applications in order to infect the Android operating system. They typically find a popular app, modify it to include their malicious payload, and then re-upload it to the Android market where it poses innocuously as the original. Once a confused user downloads the infected app, his or her Android device is ready to share all sorts details with its creators.
For those who don't know , every app has to define which resources it wants access to. When you install an app (via the Android Market), you'll be informed very clearly what data and services the app will have access to. The major '+' about this system is that apps can't under no circumstance misinform the user.
The Android operating system is very secure but it has one weakness : its users ignorance .They basically refuse to read what rights the app is asking for ......How's to blame if you install an alarm clock app that wants the ability to send SMS'es??
