Over 100 million Android phones shipped in the second quarter of 2012 alone. In the U.S., a September 2012 survey of smartphone users gave Android a whopping 52.2% market share. Targets this large are difficult for malware authors to resist. And they aren’t resisting—attacks against Android are increasing rapidly. In these pages, we’ll share some examples, and offer some perspective. We’ll ask: How serious are these attacks? Are they likely to widen or worsen? And what reasonable steps should IT organizations and individuals take to protect themselves?

According to a security roundup by Trend Micro, the number of high risk and dangerous apps that are targeting Android users has risen, from 30,000 in June to 175,000 in September.

So in fact if your wanting to avoid Malware on your phone their telling you to swap to Apple (basically)?

changing from my loved Android to an Apple phone never going to happen by me !!

follow simple rules 101 of basic computing security and I think you should be ok, have survived this long on my PC being careful but hey we all make small mistakes. I use GData_Mobile Security2 on my Android and follow my instincts when downloading and surfing :P freebies: if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is except of course when we are looking at malwaretips.com giveaways..of course

I see. Currently use Trend (of course :P ), but your right if you stay away from sites you don't know you should be fine. If though you have a kid on the phone/Android, better to have everything really tight.

Actually use BitDefender whether that is unfortunate who knows as it works for me :P 3 kids on Android so better to be prepared than befuddled lol

I like your new Android tag in your signature McLovin :)

True, but some people just don't want to risk of bricking, plus average people won't know how to do that.

This talk about Android malware is nonsense in my opinion. Stay away from cracked apps, enable unknown sources only when needed and disable it when done, don't use anything other than the official app store available on your device. Also antivirus apps only searches for infected apps, which if somewhat useful, but if an infected app wasn't detected, the antivirus can't prevent any malicious action done by the app, as it does not have any permission to prevent apps from performing their action. So never pay for an antivirus app on Android.
