Deric Lostutter, 29, of Winchester, Kentucky, pleaded not guilty this week after being indicted in July on four felony counts, including a count of lying to the FBI.

Lostutter is the Anonymous member who exposed the infamous Steubenville High School rape case, when members of the local high school football team publicly and repeatedly sexually assaulted an underage girl, recording the events and later posting some of the images and videos online.

Going by the name of KYAnonymous, and together with a co-conspirator, Noah McHugh, a.k.a. JustBatCat, of Alexandria, Virginia, Lostutter hacked into the website of Steubenville High School, searching for the identities of the high schoolers he saw in the online videos.

Lostutter and McHugh formed KnightSec
The two, hacking under the name of KnightSec, found videos stored on the some parts of the high school's website, recorded by students on the night of the event.

The two leaked these additional videos online, along with accusations against the local government, law enforcement, and the high school’s administration for orchestrating a cover-up to protect the members of the football team. Lostutter and McHugh also defaced the high school's website.

Their video exposed the covered-up case and got the two hackers international fame, later appearing in several high-profile news and media publications, such as the Rolling Stones and CNN.

McHugh has already pleaded guilty
The FBI eventually tracked down both hackers and pressed charges in subsequent years. Two Steubenville football players were tried and found guilty. One student was sentenced to one year in jail while the other received a two-year sentence.

Lostutter faces up to 16 years in prison for his crimes, five years for three hacking counts, and another year for lying to the FBI. His partner, JustBatCat, pleaded guilty to the same crimes a few days before Lostutter.

For the past few years, Lostutter has been constantly raising money to cover his legal fees. Below is the video KnightSec published regarding the Steubenville incident.

A crime is a crime but in my opinion the two men found guilty of the rape surely deserve more time than the hackers who exposed the two rapists.
A very prevalent problem persists within local governments, local law enforcement and most definitely school administrations, particularly when it is student athletes.
Schools would rather cover it up than tarnish their schools reputation with no regard for the victim.
Local governments and law enforcement in small jurisdictions are more prone to cover ups since most everyone knows everybody and they are hailed as heroes.
They are swayed by local politicians, school officials and their neighbors.
Since Winchester,Kentucky is a town of about 18,000 people local law enforcement are not experienced to handle major crimes and are most often prone to mistakes.
They almost always call in State and or Federal authorities unless they want to hide something.

..simply incredible...1-2 years for sexual assault, probably nothing for the covered-up case and 15 years for hacking and 1 for lying to the FBI...I can imagine by this that the high schoolers didn't lye to the FBI....

The hackers are being charged with Federal crimes - and the US government is real big on making examples of hackers after post-Snowden-Assange-etc.

The two athletes were charged and sentenced under state criminal codes.

This accounts for the big differences.

It's what they call political correctness - I'd given the guy a medal, the two lads life in prison, as they've destroyed their victims life. Trump states over and over (like the UK) political correctness is destroying this world. Someone breaks in to a house, breaks his leg and sues the owner.

The federal government is tough on hackers and they ought to be.There is no excuse however what they did brought this to the forefront.
16 years being the maximum sentence doesn't mean that's what he will get and I am sure they other guy plead guilty to a lesser crime with less jail time.
However if you read the following article http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/17/s...es-steubenville-ohio.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1 it gives you an insight into how these two offenders got such lenient sentences.Of course this too depends on the felonies they were charged with, the prosecutor and the judge. The latter being elected officials.
Pay close attention to where some blamed the girl.
I doubt with these sentences they were convicted of rape and kidnapping.

If you are drunk (we deal with rape victims in A&E) you are bylaw not able to consent, therefore it instantly becomes rape, it's a typical situation, a group of young men (as they say) having fun. I've seen the aftermath of rape and it destroys lives, often for life.

The main problems, as highlighted with football players and the rich, always seem to get away with it - anyone who get's this scum off the streets deserves credit, the girl would never have known what happened had she not seen the videos, in that state I can clearly see why.

“rape culture and excessive adulation of male athletes” at Steubenville High. Sums up the whole persona.

I personally fins it disturbing how the school put the football players under their wing. It's a sport. You think that's a good enough excuse to cover up RAPE. Also to be even charged less than the hackers. Although some can be bad and may have deserved to have gotten time for other misdimeters you shouldn't be punished for standing up to the weak or the unheard..

"were imbibing from red plastic cups inside the home of a volunteer football coach at Steubenville High at what would be the first of several parties that night" They were all under age. Everyone there should have at least been charged with under age drinking. That coach should have been charged for allowing it to take place. If the stupid adults involved had put a stop to this in the beginning there would have been less chance this would have happened. And to put the blame on a teen girl is disgusting.
