It is obvious that computer networks need protection in view of things like the proliferation of Botnets, Government sponsored malware, Cyberwarfare as is now occurring in the Ukraine, and especially the destruction of the BattleFleet by the Cylons. With these things in mind AT&T Intellectual Property (formerly Bell Labs- the folks who discovered cosmic microwave background radiation leading to the formulation of the Big Bang Theory) has filed a patent for a Guard chip/firmware combo which constitutes "a system that can adapt to new threats, that cannot be by-passed by the user of the user operating system, and that also prevents threats from reaching critical components of a user operating system."
