Apple today previewed iOS 16, the company's next major update for the iPhone, featuring a redesigned, customizable Lock Screen, new sharing and personalization capabilities, and more.

Lock Screen, Notifications, and Focus

An all-new, fully customizable Lock Screen allows users to edit a large number of design elements, including type styles and colors, for a more personalized look. The new Lock Screen includes a row of widgets and Apple says that there are millions of possible design combinations. Users can create multiple Lock Screens and switch between them easily by swiping.

Notifications now roll up from the bottom of the screen and can easily be hidden, ensuring users have a clear view of their personalized Lock Screen. Live Activities make it easier to keep track of events in real-time directly from the Lock Screen, such as when playing music or working out.

Focus modes have been refined in iOS 16, now allowing users to tie Focus modes to a specific customized Lock Screen. Focuses can also be activated by swiping between different dedicated Lock Screens. Focus filters allow users to filter out distracting content inside apps, such as tab groups in Safari, events in Calendar, or conversations in Messages.

Messages

Messages now includes the ability to edit and delete sent messages, and mark messages as unread. SharePlay sessions can be activated directly from the Messages app, while a new Shared With You API enables developers to integrate shared experiences directly into their apps.

Dictation, Siri, and Live Text

A new dictation experience keeps the keyboard open when speaking, allowing users to use a combination of speech and typing in real-time. Dictation also now automatically adds punctuation and emojis to messages, including via Siri. A new App Intents API allows ‌Siri‌ Shortcuts to start working with no setup.

Live Text expands to video in ‌iOS 16‌, allowing users to select text in playing video. New quick actions in selected Live Text can provide relevant activities such as currency conversion, and users can translate text directly in the camera view. There are improvements to Visual Lookup, and touching and holding on to the subject of an image allows users to pull out subjects and drag them elsewhere.

Here are iPhones and iPads that support iOS and iPadOS 16

To install iOS 16 (beta or public release this fall), you need one of the following iPhone models:
  • iPhone 13 (regular, mini, Pro, and Pro Max).
  • iPhone 12 (regular, mini, Pro, and Pro Max).
  • iPhone 11 (regular, Pro, and Pro Max).
  • iPhone XS and XS Max.
  • iPhone XR.
  • iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
  • iPhone SE 2020 and 2022.
Unfortunately, with iOS 16, Apple ditches the original iPhone SE, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. The latest iOS now requires the A11 or newer CPU.

On the iPad side, things are slightly different. Like iOS 16, iPadOS 16 ditches several old iPads, such as iPad mini 4 and iPad Air 2. However, iPadOS 16 retains compatibility for the A9 and A10-based tablets. You can run iPadOS 16 on the following iPads:
  • iPad Pro (all models).
  • iPad Air 5.
  • iPad Air 4.
  • iPad Air 3.
  • iPad mini 6.
  • iPad mini 5.
  • iPad (5th gen and newer).
If you want to try iOS 16 or iPadOS 16, join the Apple Beta Software program on the official Apple website.
Just keep in mind that using pre-release software on your primary device is not a very good idea.

Here is why Stage Manager in iPadOS 16 is only coming to M1 iPads

Earlier this week at its WWDC 2022 conference, Apple unveiled the next versions of its operating systems, including macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16. The headlining feature this time around is Stage Manager, which puts all of your open windows on the side of the screen in a miniaturized state and then you can keep open the windows you want to focus on. To switch programs, you just click on the preview on the left. You can also group windows together in case you use several programs to complete tasks.

That said, Stage Manager is not coming to all Apple hardware even if they support the latest versions of the company's operating system. When it comes to iPadOS, only M1 iPads support Stage Manager while older models are out of luck, despite supporting iPadOS 16. Although this has led to some backlash from people using older devices, Apple has now provided some clarification behind this move.

In a statement to tech reporter Rene Ritchie, Apple had the following to say:
Stage Manager is a fully integrated experience that provides all-new windowing experience that is incredibly fast and responsive and allow users to run 8 apps simultaneously across iPad and an external display with up to 6K resolution. Delivering this experience with the immediacy users expect from iPad’s touch-first experience requires large internal memory, incredibly fast storage, and flexible external display I/O, all of which are delivered by iPads with the M1 chip.

iOS 16 Will Let iPhone Users Bypass CAPTCHAs in Supported Apps and Websites

Tapping on images of traffic lights or deciphering squiggly text to prove you are human will soon be a much less common nuisance for iPhone users, as iOS 16 introduces support for bypassing CAPTCHAs in supported apps and websites.

The handy new feature can be found in the Settings app under Apple ID > Password & Security > Automatic Verification. When enabled, Apple says iCloud will automatically and privately verify your device and Apple ID account in the background, eliminating the need for apps and websites to present you with a CAPTCHA verification prompt.

Apple recently shared a video with technical details about how the feature works, but simply put, Apple's system verifies that the device and Apple ID account are in good standing and presents what is called a Private Access Token to the app or website. This new system will offer a better user experience for tasks such as signing into or creating an account, with improved user privacy and accessibility compared to CAPTCHAs.

There is a possibility that Apple Pay may soon be supported by Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox in iOS 16, as suggested by a new finding by Steve Moser of MacRumors. Those using iOS 15 or older won't be able to use any browser other than Safari to pay with Apple Pay when shopping on the web.

Moser has discovered that Apple Pay works with Edge and Chrome in the iOS 16 beta 4, and went on to share the information on Twitter. Screenshots shared by him show a “Continue with Apple Pay” option on Apple's checkout page on Edge.

Last year in iOS 15, Apple added a feature that is designed to let you highlight and select written and typed text from photos, interacting with it as you would text in any other place in the operating system.

With iOS 16, likely launching to the public in September, Apple has continued to improve Live Text, and it has some impressive new capabilities, which we've outlined below.

With the fifth beta of iOS 16, Apple has updated the battery icon on iPhones with Face ID to display the specific battery percentage rather than just a visual representation of battery level. The new battery indicator is available on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, with the exception of the 5.4-inch ‌iPhone 12‌/13 mini.

In today's recently released iOS 16 beta 5, Apple has added a toggle in the battery section of the settings app to enable battery percentage on almost any iPhone with Face ID. Previously on iOS 15 and earlier this information was only available by swiping down the Control Centre.

Apple Confirms iPadOS 16 Will Launch After iOS 16 This Fall
Apple has released today the first iPadOS 16.1 beta today, confirming along the way that the release of iPadOS 16 has been delayed to later this fall. In a statement shared with Techcrunch, the company explained that iPadOS 16.1 will be the version of the OS that will roll out to the public later this fall, and it will be released after iOS 16.

“This is an especially big year for iPadOS. As its own platform with features specifically designed for iPad, we have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on its own schedule. This Fall, iPadOS will ship after iOS, as version 16.1 in a free software update,” the company told Techcrunch.

Bloomberg previously reported that Apple was planning to delay the release of iPadOS 16, a release that could require more polish than usual. The latest iPadOS 16 betas have been quite buggy, with the new Stage Manager feature being a main source of concern among beta testers

Stage Manager will let users of M1 iPads access a new multitasking experience where they can interact with multiple apps at the same time. The feature got some stage time during Apple’s WWDC conference back in June, though it will be turned off by default on iPadOS 16.

Last week, Federico Viticci, iPad evangelist and Editor in Chief of MacStories.net expressed in a Twitter thread his many frustrations regarding the state of Stage Manager in the latest iPadOS 16 betas. “The fact that going back to classic Split View and Slide Over feels *so* nice right now is…pretty telling,” Viticci tweeted.

If iPadOS 16 will need to spend a bit more time in the oven, it should be business as usual for the next iOS release. Apple is expected to hold its iPhone 14 event on September 7, with the new devices possibly launching on September 16.
