Apple is about to stop selling all iPhone models with Lightning ports in the European Union to comply with the EU’s common charger law. Under the new rules that were adopted two years ago, all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB-C charging port by December 28, 2024.

A week ago, the French website iGeneration first reported that Apple was planning to stop selling its Lightning-equipped iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE in the EU on December 28, with sales also set to stop in Switzerland about a week earlier. Well, MacRumors spotted today that these three iPhone models are indeed no longer available for purchase on Apple’s Swiss online store. However, they’re still available to purchase in EU countries as of this writing.

If Apple Authorized Resellers in the EU will be allowed to continue selling their remaining iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE stock in the EU after December 28, Apple won’t be able to do so on both its online and retail stores. This will make the USB-C powered iPhone 15 from 2023 Apple’s cheapest iPhone in the EU (approximately €869), at least for a couple of months.

Apple is reportedly set to release a new version of its low-cost iPhone SE in Spring 2025, and this model is expected to use the same design as the iPhone 14. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this could be the first iPhone model to ship with a new in-house modem from Apple replacing a Qualcomm part.

I actually really like the Lightning connector on iPhones, & as I have a 13 I still use it, but my Mac Air uses USB C...
