What do you recommend instead of a VPN?

On network side you can't do much as everything can be bypassed but using a secure DNS like NextDNS (with OISD list) or Quad9 is good.
Most important thing is secure/ harden your whole PC.

Aren't we talking about malware testing right now? I don't want another service to block the malware before the product I'm testing does. Also, secure DNS doesn't help against IP loggers as an example.
