aswMBR is a tool created to aid in detecting and removing rootkits from your computer. It’s focused on dealing with rootkits such as TDL4/3, Whisler and MBRoot (Sinowal).

For this reason you should not consider it as an antivirus solution but merely as a cleaner for a specific type of malware. Rootkits can hide on your computer and grant unauthorized access your system. They tend to hide quite well and that’s why aswMBR is an application designed to deal just with them.

aswMBR displays a comprehensive interface which makes it very easy to use regardless of your experience with computer. It offers you a simple window that contains only the buttons you need to click in order to start the scan, fix the detected problems, save the log or close the application.

A scan takes a few minutes at most and displays all the detected components if they are found. The location path for each discovered rootkit is highlighted in red, making it easier for you to spot. aswMBR needs to use different methods to remove the rootkits and for this it provides two different “fix” buttons. It’s a bit confusing at first, but as long as the application does its job, that’s a thing you can overlook.

After the scan is complete, you have the option to save the task log on your computer in the form of a TXT file. It can come in handy if you plan to keep a history of all your scans.

In case you are unsure about the origins or purpose of a detected file, the application offers you a simple solution in order to test it thoroughly. From within the tool’s main window you can right click the file and copy it to a different location. You can then upload it to a website that offers online scanning services or have your antivirus check it out.

In closing, thought it’s not an antivirus, aswMBR offers you a simple and practical way of checking to see if your computer is safe from intrusive and harmful malware components.
