AV-Comparatives

Interesting results for August.

Top of the class
Trend Micro: 99.5% blocked / 0.5% compromised
Symantec: 99.0% blocked / 1.0% compromised

Honorable mention
Avira and BitDefender: both at 98.4% blocked

Uh-oh
Not a very strong showing for F-Secure, G-DATA and quite a few others.

Jan - Aug 2011
Symantec: 99.1% blocked / 0.4% user dependent / 0.5% compromised
BitDefender: 99.0% blocked / 1.0% compromised
F-Secure: 98.8% blocked / 1.1% compromised
G-DATA and Trend Micro: 98.7% blocked / 1.3% compromised

No surprise to Symantec since they are really doing well and maintain top product with high detection rates.

A couple of points on the August results.

  • Due to the fact that new releases are to be included in September, only 187 links were used in the August test
  • According to Avira staff member
Actually, we didn't really improve things related to this test. The improvement in detection rate wasn't that big for Avira, but rather other AVs dropped somewhat. Weird. Summer holidays? I expect much better protection when the next version of ProActiv and the NV AI are introduced.

Some weird results Aug 2011..... the only vendor who is constant is Symantec.
Trend Micro taking #1 place and on #5 in front of well known vendors like Kaspersky , Avast or G-DATA is K7.
F-Secure IS manage to block only 93,7% of the malware in August, now that's a bad results for a vendor who was used with a 99,0% detection rate.
Webroot really needs a the new WRSA suite because at this point they are a total joke.

Edit: Boxx you beat me. :P
Edit2: Mark has some more information. :D

Did they use Avast Internet Security or Avast Free Antivirus?

Edit: Looks like they included Avast Free in the second half, per request. (From PDF file).

PC Tools is part of the Symantec Corporation so it makes sense to leverage technologies where it meets the needs of our customers. We do not share engines, rather we share the signature database and virus definitions which is a common and acceptable practice across the industry. We use these definitions in addition to a range of technologies that the PC Tools R&D team have developed in house.

It would also appear that Browser Defender uses the Norton Safe Web database.

Avast lost ground this time, mcafee surprised me, NIS, BD and F-secure as usual.

Anyone taken a look at the Anti-Phishing Tests?

However, Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials and Sophos were excluded from this test.

yes i did, Avast don't have anti-phising features, that is a serious lack.
