They do need an anti-ransomware module (file protection). This product is usually bypassed by it in the hub. This module would have great success

Avast should rely more on their implemented DeepScreen and HIPS which they can revise little on the concept. Although Hardened Mode is strong enough however not all users will easily notice that configuration.

Thanks for the links! Aforementioned, i'm not either a big fan of avast!.. Every experiencie i've had are disgusting.. Still, one of the better "free" options..

For AV's with no extra preventive features, you can easily use them in conjunction with something like NVT smart object blocker/File system protector(freeware) to protect against malicious processes, ransomware and anything else which can go past the AV. e.g Ad-aware.
